Newborn found abandoned
ISLAMABAD, April 7: A two-day old baby girl was found abandoned behind a private clinic on Saturday but after her recovery, two families approached the police claiming on the child, police said.
Some people spotted the baby girl at the plot situated at the backside of a private clinic in Shahzad Town.
On information, the police reached the spot and shifted the baby to the police station. Later, two families also reached the police station and claimed on the child.
However, they failed to satisfy the police. Later, the police shifted the newborn to Pims.
The police said that efforts were in progress to prove the claims of the families. Besides, the police also approached the administration of the clinic to ascertain who the parents of the baby girl were but the police were clueless.— Staff Reporter
Girls killed in accident
ISLAMABAD, April 7: Two beggar girls were killed after being hit by a speedy vehicle on Saturday, police said.
Both the girls were crossing Expressway Highway at Dhoke Kala Khan when they were hit by the vehicle. Resultantly, they suffered multiple injuries and later shifted to hospital where they were pronounced dead.
The police impounded the vehicle and arrested its driver. Later the bodies were shifted to mortuary for pending identification and legal process. The girls were eight and nine years old. — Staff Reporter
GB youth stage sit-in
ISLAMABAD, April 7: Over 200 students from Gilgit-Baltistan continued their sit-in at Parade Avenue on the second consecutive day Saturday against the killing of innocent people in Chilas.
The participants said they would not leave the place till their demands were met.Raza Abbas, the president of Youth of Gilgit-Baltistan, which organized the sit-in, said so far 200 persons had been missing but the government was not taking any step to recover them.
He said the government had failed to provide protection to passenger buses on the Karakoram Highway.
“Strict action should be taken against those responsible for the incidents of Kohistan, Chilas and Gilgit.” He also demanded that communication system blocked in the region after the killings should be restored. — A Reporter
Taxila, Wah students shine
TAXILA, April 7: The students of Taxila and Wah Cantonment have clinched many positions in primary and middle standard examinations 2012 held under Federal Government Educational Institutions (FGEI) (Cantonment-Garrison) across the country.
In primary standard examinations, Abdullah Aijaz Butt secured first position by obtaining 573 out of 600 marks. Mahnoor Siddiqui was declared second by securing 563 marks.
Javeria Siraj secured 559 marks and was declared third. All the position-holders are students of the Federal Government Primary School No. 10, Wah Cantonment. In middle standard examination, Sidra Aijaz of Federal Government Girls High School No. 2, Wah Cantonment, clinched fourth position by securing 642 marks. — Correspondent
Spring gala concludes
RAWALPINDI, April 7: The 21-day long colourful spring festival came to an end on Saturday which remained a centre of entertainment for the residents of the garrison city.
The spring gala was organised by Parks and Horticulture Agency (PHA) at Nawaz Sharif Park. Music concerts, flower exhibition, magic shows and other attractions pertaining to entertainment were the main features at the event.
The festival, according to Managing Director PHA Capt (retired) Mushtaq Ahmed was the first of its kind in Rawalpindi in the last 20 years and it was a great success particularly in view of the prevailing law and order situation.
“The spring gala was, no doubt, a great entertainment in the city. We enjoyed it and we would miss the event a lot. It is really sad to see the organisers winding up their tents and luggage. The park will now pose a deserted look,” Safwan Ahmed, a visitor told Dawn. — Our Reporter
Fruit, vegetable market
ISLAMABAD, April 7: Fruit and vegetable market (Sabzi Mandi) located in Sector I-11 would be developed as a model market of the country in line with international standards.
“The market has become a central trade hub of the region due to its ever-increasing business volume,” Chairman Prime Minister’s Task Force on Islamabad, Faisal Sakhi Butt said while addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the newly-elected office-bearers of Anjuman-e-Whole Sale Fruit and Commission Agents of the fruit and vegetable market on Saturday.
He said that the task force had been assigned the responsibility to make the federal capital a model city in all respects therefore the task force embarked upon a gigantic programme to make the city a model metropolis.
While expressing their views on the occasion, the traders said that fruit and vegetable market had been providing quality fruits and vegetables not only to twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad but also supplying these items to many areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab.
It has been decided that the CDA would coordinate with the traders’ community of the market to execute development work. — A Reporter
