Man shot dead

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, April 17: A watchman was gunned down by unknown assailants here on Tuesday.

Police said two armed persons riding on a motorcycle opened fire at the watchman identified as Khawar, resident of Madina Colony, injuring him seriously.

The assailants escaped after the incident. The injured was taken to DHQ hospital where he succumbed to injures. Police registered case and were looking for the killers. —Correspondent

World Haemophilia Day

PESHAWAR, April 17: The Fatmid Foundation, Peshawar centre, arranged a function here on Tuesday in connection with the World Haemophilia Day.

Children exhibited special interest and shown their emotions through presenting poems and tableaus and got appreciations from the participants on the occasion. The function besides the parents of the under treatment children was also attended by students, medical experts and general public.

The administrator of the foundation Col (retd) Afzal Hassan Khan said due to large number of patients the facility had become over-crowded. He said due the backwardness the number of thalassaemia and hemophilia patients was on rise in the province. He urged the media to play role in this regard. —Bureau Report

Family seeks justice

MINGORA, April 17: An aged citizen and his daughters on Tuesday blocked the Makanbagh Chowk and warned to set themselves on fire against ‘humiliation’ of their family by influential people of Shagai, Saidu Sharif.

Shamsul Hadi, 65, and his daughters said the influential people beat them up and threatened with dire consequences if they went to police. They alleged these people wanted to occupy their land.

They accused the police of not registering FIR due to influence of the people. They demanded of the chief justice of Pakistan, president and prime minister to take note of the excesses.

Meanwhile, unknown assailants gunned down a retried sub-inspector Bakht Zada at busy Odhyani market of Mingora city on Tuesday and managed to escape. —Correspondent

Women trafficking

PESHAWAR, April 17: The Provincial Commission on the Status of Women on Tuesday held a consultation with MPAs to review the Women Trafficking Bill of MPA Shazia Tehmas, which was introduced in the provincial assembly in 2010 to be enacted into a law.

According to a statement the objective of the session was to review the bill in terms of its content, scope and provisions and to reach a consensus draft addressing gaps if any.

The participants provided inputs which shall be incorporated into the existing draft for legislation. Women trafficking is a grave issue prevailing in various parts of the province and in different forms. —Bureau Report

Anti-polio drive

PESHAWAR, April 17: Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court Dost Mohammad Khan will inaugurate the three-day anti-polio campaign in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on April 21.

A press release issued on Tuesday said the chief justice will administer oral polio vaccines to children under five years of age to kick start the campaign. It said the immunisation saved children from poliomyelitis that crippled children for their entire lives. —Bureau Report

Free medical camps

TIMERGARA, April 17:  The Al-Khidmat Foundation, Lower Dir chapter, on Tuesday set up free medical camps in militancy affected areas of Haya Serai, Kotkay Maidan and Paito Darra in association with Lil Saili Wal Mahroom.

Hundreds of needy patients, including elders, women and children, were provided with medical treatment, laboratory facilities and medicines, according to a press release.

Speaking to area’s people in-charge free medical camps Majidullah said the foundation had been providing various relief goods, including medical facilities, to deserving people.

Meanwhile, students of the government school Timergara, teachers, elders and officials of education department on Tuesday held a walk to raise awareness about children’s enrollment in schools. —Correspondent

Historical sites tour

PESHAWAR, April 17: The directorate of archaeology gas launched an awareness campaign to properly highlight the significance of the historical sites and buildings located in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Initially, a free-guided tour was arranged to the remains of Takht Bhai and Jamal Garhi situated in Mardan district. The participants were led by curator Peshawar Museum Nidaullah Sehrai. Senior citizens, students, members of civil society and media persons were part of the tour.

A statement issued here on Tuesday said the Director Archaeology and Museums, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dr Shah Nazar Khan briefed the participants about the basic purpose of the free guided tour before departure to the historic sites. —Bureau Report

Worker rescued

PESHAWAR, April 17: A transport operative (cleaner) was rescued after he fell into an oil tanker while cleaning it at Chamkani here on Tuesday.

The worker, identified as Shakeel, was rescued by the workers of Rescue 1122, after the local people and transporters failed to pull him out as he got unconscious due to toxic gases.

A spokesman of the Rescue 1122 said the locals had no safety gears for the purpose. The worker was shifted to hospital, where his condition was stated to be stable. —Bureau Report

Workshop on performing arts

PESHAWAR, April 17: The Baacha Khan Trust Educational Foundation (BKTEF) on Tuesday began a two-week training workshop on performing arts and music.

The training workshop was formally inaugurated by legendary artist Sayed Mumtaz Ali Shah alias Shah Jee. A number of well known artists, singers, musicians, journalists and civil society activists participated in the ceremony. The workshop will be concluded on April 30.

The workshop “polishing creative expression of the youth’’ is part of series of training workshops organised by the BKTEF to revive the indigenous art, culture and heritage of Pakhtunkhwa.

This workshop includes lectures and practices on drama, acting and theatre performances and musicology. —Bureau Report
