KARACHI, April 20: The city witnessed yet another day of bloody incidents with at least 14 people losing their lives in targeted killings and other acts of violence on Friday. Seven of the killings took place in Orangi Town alone.

The day dawned with the recovery of two bodies in Orangi Town.

Officials at the Iqbal Market police station said the body of a young man was found in Karimabad, a locality in Sector 11½, at around 6am. The victim, who was shot in the temple, was identified as Mukhtar Ahmed, resident of Sector 12-L of the same town. He worked at a hosiery unit, also located in Orangi, they added.

A little later, the body of a 40-year-old man was found near Baloch Para in Setor 1-C. The victim was identified as Muhammad Yaqoob, a driver of a route 1-D bus, SDPO of Orangi Town Tariq Malik said.

Both bodies were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

As the day progressed, the law and order situation in Orangi aggravated with more people falling victim to gunmen.

A vendor lost his life in a drive-by shooting in Aligarh Colony soon after Juma prayers. The victim, Abdul Hameed, was a fruit seller and had his stall in the colony. His body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

Later, two rag-pickers were killed and another was wounded when they were targeted by hit-and-run armed men near Qadhafi Chowk. The deceased were identified as Muhammad Nawab and Kamran Khan, whose bodies were also sent to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities, the police said, adding that the wounded victim was identified as Gul Khan, 18.

In Mominabad, two persons were killed and another one was wounded in a drive-by shooting in Haryana Colony, SDPO of Orangi Town said. The shooting had left the victims wounded but two of them, Imtiaz Qadir and Sheraz, died while they were being rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, he said, adding that the third victim, Faiz Saleem, was admitted there for treatment.

In a late Thursday night attack, an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was killed within the remit of the Nabi Bakhsh police station.

The attack took place at Burma Hotel, Ramasawami, where Shoaib Sohail, a worker of Unit No.34 of the party’s organisational set-up, was targeted by unknown suspects riding a motorcycle. The victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where he died during treatment, the police said.

The body of a young man was found within the remit of the Memon Goth police station in Malir in the early hours of Friday. The victim was shot to the head, the police said, adding that he was identified as Abdul Rehman, resident of the Al Falah area.

A rickshaw driver was shot dead by unknown killers near Martin Quarters, within the remit of the Jamshed Quarters police station. The police said that the victim, Ghaffar Ramzan, was a resident of Orangi Town. His body was removed to the Civil Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

A cobbler was shot dead by armed men riding a motorcycle within the remit of the Jauharabad police station in the evening. The police said that the victim, Gul Sher, 35, was with his work when he was targeted. The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

On the outskirts of the city, a man said to be a Sabzi Mandi worker was shot dead by unknown assailants near Chakar Hotel on the Superhighway. The area police officer said that the victim, Babar Hayat, seemed to have been targeted by the attackers as nothing from his belongings were taken away.

The ongoing wave of killings in the city continued beyond sunset as a young man standing at a bus stop in North Nazimabad was shot dead by armed men riding a motorcycle.

Police said that incident took place within the remit of the Shahrah-i-Noor Jehan police station. The victim, Rafiq Sadat, 25, suffered a single bullet wound and died before he could be shifted to a hospital.

Area SHO Raja Tariq said that the victim seemed to be hailing from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but his residential address in Karachi could not be ascertained immediately.

In the D-I area of Khokhrapar, Malir, unknown assailants opened fire at a group of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz activists, who were distributing handbills concerning the party’s call for a strike on Saturday. The shooting left two persons, 25-year-old Tariq Kachchi — the area chief of the party — and his associate, Usman Ghani Kachchi, wounded, the area police said.
