KARACHI, April 22: Federal Minister for Law Farooq H. Naek has said that saving a human life is the most commendable act in Islam and, as such, organ donation and transplantation could not be regarded as an act against the teachings of the religion. Speaking as chief guest at a seminar on ‘Organ donation and transplantation’ organised in collaboration with Karachi Club on Saturday night, he said that under the laws passed recently, any citizen willing to donate an organ could do so voluntarily but indulging in organ trade or donating organs for commercial purposes was a cognizable offence. Speaking at the seminar, Dr Adibul Hasan Rizvi, the head of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, said that organ transplantation gave the recipient a new lease of life. He said the recent legislation on organ donation was, in fact, aimed at effectively checking the organ trade that had been continuing for long in the country “The legislation ensures that organ donation directly benefits the deserving person,” he added. On the occasion, retired Justice Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim announced donation of his liver.—APP
