RAWALPINDI, April 23:  Police investigating into the murder of a man, his wife and their son, on Monday recovered a hammer and a dagger and collected some other evidence from the crime scene.

Waqas Tariq was being interrogated by the police after he confessed to killing his parents and brother in revenge for being scolded for his poor show in his chartered accountancy (CA) examinations. Police will produce Waqas Tariq in the court of area magistrate on Tuesday.

Tariq Mehmood, his wife Tabasum Tariq and their son Saad Tariq’s bodies were recovered from their rented house in New Katarian on Sunday night.

Tariq Minhas, the brother-in-law of Tariq Mehmood, said: “When I went to my sister’s house and rang the door bell, nobody responded. I called my brother and we again knocked at the door. This time Waqas Tariq, who seems to be mentally disturbed, opened the door and we went inside.”

Deputy Superintendent of Police DSP New Town circle Sabir Nadeem Ahmed when contacted said Waqas had been taken into custody. He said during preliminary questioning, he could not satisfy the police that strengthened police suspicion that he was the main culprit. The DSP while quoting the alleged killer said first he bludgeoned his father, mother and then brother with a hammer last Thursday.

Later, he slashed his mother’s neck and then tore her clothes to give a twist to the murder. He killed his brother because he was the only witness to the murders, he said.

According to preliminary post-mortem report, the victims’ heads were smashed with hammer. However,  specimens were taken from their bodies and sent to the chemical examiner’s laboratory to ascertain whether the victims were poisoned before the murder.—Mohammad Asghar
