Two killed on road

KARAK, April 27: Two persons were killed and three others injured in a road accident on Indus Highway here on Friday.

Police said that a speedy car going towards Peshawar hit a motorcycle in Shaheedan Mor, critically injuring two persons riding the motorcycle. Three persons onboard the car also sustained injures as it was overturned.

The injured were shifted to district headquarters hospital Karak where the two motorcycle riders identified as Rukhsat Khan and Sarfaraz, residents of Isak Chountra, succumbed to injuries. The other three injured who have been identified as Murad Khan, Gul Abbas and Zahoor Ali, residents of Gumbat Kohat were referred to hospital in Kohat. —Correspondent

Peace walkers reach Lakki

LAKKI MARWAT, April 27: Participants of a peace walk, being staged from D.I. Khan to Mingora (Swat), reached here on Friday.

District sports officer Shafqatullah Khan along with area elders and large number of people received members of the peace walk near Darra Pezu town bordering D.I. Khan district. Lucky Cement officials also presented a warm welcome to them on entering the district.

The district administration had made special arrangements on the occasion to provide foolproof security and medical cover to the peace promoters. The main aim of the peace walk is to promote the image of the country and its people in the world as peace loving.

Another message the members of peace walk want to convey to the world nations is that the people of Pakistan are against terrorism and militancy. They carried banners and also distributed pamphlets among people carrying messages of peace and harmony. —Correspondent

Hazara receives heavy rain

MANSEHRA, April 27: The upper parts of Hazara received heavy rains on second day on Friday.

The heavy downpour, which started on Thursday evening in Mansehra, Battagram, Kohistan and Torghar districts, continued intermittently entire day on Friday.

A Met Office official said during last 24 hours Hazara received 25mm rain. Temperature dropped to 13.2 Celsius on Friday morning from 14. 5 Celsius on Thursday.

The official said rain was expected to continue intermittently for the next 24 hours, adding mercury was likely to go down further in the region. —Correspondent

Free eye camp

KOHAT, April 27: The OGDCL on Friday arranged a three-day free eye camp at the KDA divisional hospital.

The District Coordination Officer, Kohat, Shahidullah Khan inaugurated the camp and thanked the regional coordinator of OGDCL, Mushfiq Paracha, for providing such an opportunity to the poor people.

The OGDCL is providing various medical, educational and developmental facilities under its welfare programme in Kohat where it has been pumping oil and gas for the last many years in the Thall Block.

Doctors carried out check up of 350 patients and conducted operations with modern machinery of 300 patients. Patients were also given free medicines. —Correspondent

Workers to observe strike

PESHAWAR, April 27: The Mobile Towers Owners and Labourers Association (MTOLA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, will observe a strike today (Saturday) to press the companies for increasing workers’ salaries.

The workers held a protest demonstration at Sher Shah Suri road against owners of the cellular phone companies on Friday for exploiting the poor workers.

The demonstrators led by Abdul Ghaffar, president of MTOLA, carried banners and placards inscribed with demands for raise in salaries.

They plan to jam the mobile system today (Saturday) and observe protest demonstration to raise voice for their rights.

Talking to reporters, Mr Ghaffar said each company had hired two guards for each tower, who were compelled to perform duty round the clock with a paltry remuneration of Rs4,500 per month. He said on one hand cellular companies were earning billions of rupees while on the other they had ignored the basic rights of the labourers. —Bureau Report

Mother, child week

CHITRAL, April 27: During the mother and child week commencing from May 2, a four-pronged strategy will be adopted regarding provision of healthcare to mothers and children.

Speaking at a meeting chaired by Chitral DCO Rahmatullah Wazir here on Friday, the coordinator of Lady Health Workers programme Dr Ibrahim Khan said all arrangements had been made to reach all the 24 union councils of the district during the week.

He said during the week children missed out in the previous anti-polio drives would be vaccinated; de-worming tablets will be made available for children of two to five years and information about health and hygiene will be disseminated.

Rahmatullah Wazir said people specially the womenfolk in rural areas were needed to be informed about negative effects of self-medication and relentless use of anti-biotic medicines on their health. He said shortage of doctors in rural areas was a major problem. —Correspondent

Four suspects held

KOHAT, April 27: The law-enforcement agencies on Friday arrested four people posing themselves as intelligence personnel traveling in a vehicle near toll plaza on Indus Highway.

Official sources said the police at the Kohat tunnel checkpost stopped a suspicious car bearing number ICT-A-367 and asked the inmates to identify themselves. All the four passengers told the police they belonged to a military intelligence agency.

But on further interrogation they could not satisfy the police as they had no service cards or the registration of the car. They were going to Peshawar from Dera Ismail Khan.

One among them was a serving army man, Shabbir, who had been recently released in a terrorism case from Hangu jail.

The accused were identified as Hamesh Gul, Saeed ud Din, Shabbir alias Shafeerullah and another army man Ashfaq. They belonged to Tank and Waziristan Agency. The police registered a criminal case against the suspicious persons. —Correspondent
