Watchman killed

ATTOCK, April 28:  A watchman, the resident of Jalwal village of Jand tehsil was killed by some unknown persons in Gujranwala. The sources said on Saturday that 26-year-old watchman Noor Khan was attacked by some unidentified persons with knives when he was performing his duty at a market in Gujranwala. The body was brought to his native village on Friday evening for burial.

Meanwhile, as many as 18 outlaws were arrested in separate strikes in the district. Police said that Pindigheb police seized 95 bottles of liquor from the possession of a bootlegger Ehsan Ahmed from Maluwali village.  Such as, city police arrested five gamblers Agha Khan, Saeed Azeem, Eman Gull, Juma Murad and Abdul Wahab in a raid at Bijlighar Mohallah and recovered Rs9,320 stake money and two mobile phones. — Correspondent

Man commits suicide

CHAKWAL, April 28: A young man committed suicide by taking poisonous pills over a marriage issue, sources said on Saturday. Mohammad Anis, the resident of Chak Malook was in love with a girl. As his proposal was refused by the elders of the girls, he committed suicide. — Correspondent

Two alleged killers held

ISLAMABAD, April 28: The Kural police on Saturday claimed to have arrested two proclaimed offenders in connection with a murder case.

The police said the arrest was made during a raid at Nai Abadi, Khana Dak. The alleged killers would be produced before the duty magistrate on Sunday (today) for obtaining their physical remand.

The police said the two men were accused of murdering Masood Kokhar and Nasir Masood over a land dispute in March 2011. The accused raided the land of the victims and killed them, according to the police. The investigators later submitted the challan of the case to the court and got them declared proclaimed offenders.

On Saturday, the investigators got information that the accused had returned to their homes.— Staff Reporter

Lawyers’ strike

ATTOCK, April 28: The lawyers on Saturday observed a complete strike against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s disrespect of the Supreme Court verdict convicting him in the contempt proceedings.

The lawyers boycotted the court proceedings causing great problems to the litigants particularly coming form far-flung areas. While talking to local newsmen, some senior lawyers said that it was a historic decision which not only showed the freedom and supremacy of judiciary but also upheld the rule of law in the country.

They said that Prime Minister Gilani should step down because he was convicted and not eligible to hold his office. They said that Mr Gilani could not issue any executive order in the present situation because he was holding the office in violation of the constitution. — Correspondent

Theft cases

ATTOCK, April 28: An LCD TV worth Rs50,000 was stolen by unknown thieves from the district bar after breaking the window glass.

Meanwhile, some unknown thieves made away with copper wires from the transformer installed at the tower of a private mobile phone company near Burhan village.

Separate cases were registered by the respective police stations. — Correspondent

Anti-polio drive from May 3  

MUZAFFARABAD, April 28: The 3-day polio vaccination drive, which had been deferred due to a strike of the paramedical staff in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), would now commence from May 2 in ten districts, an official said on Saturday.

Dr. Sardar Shabbir Ahmed Khan, Provincial Programme Manager, Extended Programme of Immunisation (EPI) told newsmen that 1,941 teams had been constituted and 396 centres and 137 transit points had been set up to administer polio drops to 665,528 children up to the age of 5 years.

He said 32 tehsil supervisors and 458 area in-charges had also been appointed for the delivery of vaccine and other items and submission of performance reports to their respective district control rooms to be monitored by the district health officers. — Staff Reporter

Civil disobedience  

TAXILA, April 28: Tehrik-i-Sooba Hazara (TSH) would launch civil disobedience movement if the government announced creation of Seraiki province putting aside the demand for Hazara province.

Leader of Tehrik-i-Sooba Hazara (TSH) Baba Haider Zaman said this while talking to newsmen at a local hotel in Wah Cantt on Saturday. He said all options would be utilised to achieve the goal of creating the province.

He said that the work on new options would continue for creation of new province as the movement had already been turned into a full-fledged political party.

Baba Haider lashed out at the government for focusing only on Seraiki province and avoiding the Hazara province movement.

Responding to a question he said: “We are not against the Seraiki province. President’s statement about Seraiki province is encouraging however the government should honour the demand of the Hazara people.”

He was of the view that more provinces were the right of the people. — Correspondent
