Great piece Irfan Husain.
So these were the Indian pillars on which the Raj stood. An answer to my children's surprised questions as to how on earth an expeditionary force of 5 thousand British soldiers ruled 400 million Indians for 150 years from a distance of 7 thousand miles on steamers that took one month to travel to India from a bunch of miniscule British Isles.

Nadir Shah of Persia brought his army down through Afghanistan and Northwest India to sack Delhi in 1739. The Mogul rulers of India asked for the protection of the British. A British governor general was not appointed until 1773.
Although the Persians were gone their Persian allies, the raiders of Northwest India were still active. For these intervening 30 years in the British Crown, the East India Company and Indian rulers were hammering out a deal. Who were the British ministers going to deal with? The Untouchables?

We Pakistanis (and Indians) are a tragically unusual lot. I can't think of any other formerly colonized nation that glorifies the era of British imperialism as we do. What an insult to our forebears who were hanged from trees, slaughtered on the battlefields, humiliated, treated as slaves in their own country and robbed bone dry by the Raj. Dawn has earned a well-deserved reputation in the world as a fair and objective newspaper. In keeping with this reputation, when will it print articles chronicling the atrocities and grand dacoity of the British in India? Or articles glorifying the age of Islamic flowering in India; or evoking the memories of the independence movement for which our own ancestors gave impossible sacrifices (that we squandered in just 25 years)?
