KARACHI, May 1: Stray bullets and grenade attacks in Lyari left a number of people wounded as the stand-off between police and gunmen entered a fifth day, with police claiming to have killed a gangster in Afshani Gali on Tuesday.

The CID police claimed that Tariq Siyah Pat carrying head money was gunned down during the operation. Later speaking at a press conference, Sindh IG Mushtaq Shah also confirmed the killing of the gangster, Tariq.

However, the police were unable to show the body.

Similar claims had been made by the police earlier but without corroborating evidence.

Fierce gun battles between the police and gangsters continued through the night.

A police constable, Mohammad Tufail, was killed in a rocket attack in Cheel Chowk in the early hours of Tuesday.

The policeman was posted in the Rapid Response Force in the Al Falah base. He along with his contingent had arrived in Lyari on Monday night.

Javed Jan, a footballer, was wounded when a stray bullet reportedly hit him in his house near Gabol Park.

Meanwhile, the CID police detained four Edhi Foundation workers who were distributing relief goods in Afshani Gali for questioning.
