ISLAMABAD: Former Olympian Shahnaz Sheikh said on Wednesday that naming the juniors who are unable to attend the training camp is total mismanagement on the part of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF).

The second phase of the national hockey team training camp will begin at Naseer Bunda Stadium from May 5 for preparations of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup which is scheduled to be held from May 24 to June 3 in Malaysia. Pakistan will face Great Britain, South Korea, New Zealand, Argentina, India and the hosts Malaysia.

Players Mazhar Abbas, Kashif Javaid, Muhammad Rizwan, Muhammad Tousiq, Ali Shan, Syed Kashif Shah, Muhammad Irfan and Muhammad Umar Bhutta will not be able to attend the training camp as they are part of the 18-member national junior hockey squad for the Junior Asia Cup scheduled to be held in Malaysia.

“When these junior players will not be able to participate in the camp then why has the PHF named them in the senior camp probables list?” Shahnaz asked while talking to APP adding that this disturbs the whole camp.

However, team manager Khwaja Junaid, who is present at the camp with the players, said that participation in the Asia Cup was important for the junior players.

Responding to a question, Khawaja said they have invited former Olympians to come and attend the camp as they can give help the players improve further with their expertise.

“The trials to select the final line-up by the national selection committee will be held on May 12,” he concluded.
