Man shoots wife dead

MANSEHRA, May 1: A man allegedly shot his wife dead over a minor dispute in Podnial area of Oghi on Tuesday.

Hakim Khan, brother of the slain woman, lodged an FIR with the police, claiming his brother-in-law, Abdul Rasheed, killed his sister over a minor domestic dispute and escaped. The Oghi police have registered the case.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Masood Kausar has given away Rs1 million cheque for the welfare of legal fraternity of Mansehra.

Shahjahan Khan Swati, president of Mansehra district bar association, told media persons on Tuesday the governor had announced Rs1 million for the welfare of legal fraternity during a reception earlier this year. He said Mr Kausar gave the cheque to a bar delegation, which met him at the Governor’s House in Peshawar on Monday.

He said the governor asked the lawyers to work for the betterment of nation without any political affiliations. —Correspondent

ANP workers join JI

BUNER, May 1: The ruling ANP lost more than 70 workers to the Jamaat-i-Islami in Pirabai village in Gadezai union council here on Monday.

Jamaat district amir Mohammad Hanif, former speaker of the provincial assembly Bakht Jehan Khan, former MNA Sher Akbar Khan, PK-79 president Mohammad Haleem Bacha and former provincial chief of Shabab-i-Milli Abdul Ghaffar delivered speeches at a function held the occasion.

They criticised the ANP for pushing the innocent Pakhtuns into the so-called war against terrorism just for earning dollars.

While speaking on behalf of the new entrants, Peer Mohammad Khan accused the local ANP leaders of ignoring party activists after clinching lucrative slots in the party and the government. —Correspondent

Eight suspects held

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, May 1: At least eight suspected persons were arrested while a cache of arms and ammunition was seized during a search operation conducted by security forces in different areas of Gomal here on Tuesday.

According to official sources, the security forces on a tip-off initiated a search operation in Gomal, Kot Azam and Shiekh Sultan areas and rounded up eight suspected persons.  A cache of arms and ammunition was also recovered during the search. —Correspondent

Arms recovered

GILGIT, May 1: Police recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition and arrested two people here on Tuesday.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Ali Sher told reporters in Gilgit that police on a tip-off raided a place in Kargah Nullah and recovered several SMGs, rifles, shotguns, pistols and live bullets. He said police also stopped a Chilas-bound vehicle at Hamochal checkpost and recovered explosives concealed in it and arrested the driver.

Meanwhile, a man committed suicide by jumping into Gilgit River. Local people retrieved his body and shifted it to DHQ hospital. Police registered case and started investigation. —Correspondent

School upgradation demanded

KARAK, May 1: Khurram Qaumi Jirga has demanded upgradation of the only boys high school of the union council to higher secondary level. They also regretted shortage of teachers in the school.

The demand was made by the president of the jirga Mohammad Furqan Khan at a meeting held here on Tuesday.

The meeting regretted that poor students of the area had to discontinue study after matriculation as there was only one high school in the area. It was lamented that the two posts of senior science teachers were lying vacant due to which students were suffering.

They also expressed dissatisfaction over the dilapidated condition of the school building and demanded its reconstruction.

They said the dust coming off the school ground was causing various diseases among the students, demanding construction of playground at the government land adjacent to the school. —Correspondent

PTI workers convention

PESHAWAR, May 1: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf will hold workers convention in Hayatabad Peshawar on Friday.

The announcement was made by PTI activist Engr Fahim Ahmad Khan Khalil during a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday.

Flanked by party workers, he said PTI central additional secretary Saiful Niazi, central and provincial leaders would address the workers convention. He hoped that a large number of workers and activists would participate in the event.

Regarding the prevailing uncertain political situation, he said ruling PPP-led government had failed to deliver, claiming PTI had the capacity to pull the country out of the prevailing situation.

Mr Fahim said the rulers had broken all records of corruption in the country, adding Pakistan’s image was damaged due to the ‘pro-western’ policies of the government. He said PTI tsunami will soon come to streets to oust what he described the corrupt rulers. —Bureau Report

Differences emerge in PYO

MARDAN, May 1: People’s Youth Organisation, Mardan chapter has asked the PPP Provincial Minister Sher Azam Khan to keep himself away from taking part in the ‘illegal youth convention’ to be held today (Wednesday) at the Town Hall convened by an ‘opportunist group’ of the PYO.Ajmal Iqbal and Waqas But advocate, district president and general secretary, respectively of the Mardan PYO, while speaking at a press conference at the Mardan Press Club on Tuesday said that they would not allow the opportunist group to hold the youth convention in the Town Hall.

They blamed Nayaz Ali Yousafzai and Malik Taj for leading the group, keeping the Provincial Minister Sher Azam Khan in the dark and inviting him to attend the youth convention as chief guest.

“These opportunists do not belong to the Mardan Peoples Youth Organisation,” they said, adding they had no support of the provincial and district leadership of the party.

They vowed to foil the holding of the convention. They urged the provincial minister not to come to Mardan to attend the convention. —Correspondent
