Repair of jails

PESHAWAR, May 2: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has directed the communication and works department to complete the construction and repair of district jails across the province.

A statement issued by the home and tribal affairs department here on Wednesday said that the repair and construction work in district jail Kohat, costing Rs59.924 million and in Lakki Marwat jail and old building of sub-jail, Lakki Marwat costing Rs51.243 million was being carried out.

It was stated that scheduled dates for the completion of the said schemes was September and June 2012 respectively.

However due to the importance of such internment centres and urgency of the matter the said prisons were required for utilisation on immediate basis.

The home department stressed the need for early completion of the work on both the projects. — Bureau Report

Dacoits strike in Nowshera

NOWSHERA, May 2: Unidentified dacoits broke into the house of an employee of Peshawar High Court at Azakhel Bala in the small hours of Wednesday and injured five members of the family before decamping with cash and gold ornaments.

Police said that the dacoits entered the house of Momen Khan, held the family at gunpoint and took away 20 tola jewellery, cash, prize bonds and mobile phone sets. Five members of the family including Momen, his wife, daughter, son and daughter-in-law were injured when they tried to resist. The injured family members were taken to Mian Rashid Shaheed Memorial Hospital in Pabbi town where Momen Gul and his son Nasrullah were stated to be in critical condition. — Correspondent

Declamation contest

PESHAWAR, May 2: A declamation contest was held in Bloomfield Hall Senior School here the other day. The students from class 5 to O-level participated in the contest and presented their points of views in a forceful manner laced with style and drama.

The annual debate competition was very well planned and organised and the environment was very friendly and encouraging. The topics given to different classes were relevant for all of those present there whether they were students, teachers or judges.

The topics included some social awareness issues such as ‘Peer pressure and ambitious parents are a cause of stress in children’ and another related topic was ‘Television is a negative influence’. Other topics which were very informative were ‘Modernism and technology - a disease for our planet’ and ‘Journalism and media freedom a curse or a blessing for Pakistan’. — Bureau Report

Malakand varsity exams

TIMERGARA, May 2: The BA/BSc annual examination, 2012, of the University of Malakand would commence from May 24, said a press release issued here on Wednesday.

Roll number slips of all the private and late college candidates were dispatched on their permanent addresses on April 26 2012 while roll numbers of regular candidates would be issued to the representatives of the colleges on or before May 3, 2012, said the release.

All the private and late college candidates should contact their nearest post offices while regular students should contact their concerned colleges for collection of roll number slips, the press release concluded. — Correspondent

Man killed outside jail

MANSEHRA, May 2: A man, who had allegedly kidnapped his sister-in-law, was shot dead as he came out of jail in Battagram on Wednesday after being acquitted by a local court. Habit Khan was coming out of the jail when his brother-in-law Mohammad Ibrahim shot him dead and attempted to flee but people standing nearby captured him and handed him over to police.

Police sources said that the court had acquitted Habit Khan held on the charges framed against him by his in-laws under section 376, 365-A and 252 of CrPc. The Battagram police after lodging an FIR started investigation. — Correspondent

Kidnapping bid foiled

BUNER, May 2: Locals have foiled an attempt to kidnap a 15-year-old student of government girls’ high school Cheena near Rega village allegedly by two brothers for force marriage.

Police arrested the accused persons after the family of the girl lodged FIR at Gagra Rema police station. The student told media persons at Daggar Press Club that she was on way back to her home along with her 12-year-old brother Bakht Zeb when Anwar Syed of Rega attacked her and tried to drag her to a car with his brother Umer Shed sitting inside. But fortunately a passer-by, Umar Hassan, came to her rescue.

The aunt of the girl has appealed the chief justice to take notice of the humiliation and disgrace they were being faced with. — Correspondent

Work on small dams underway

GHALANAI, May 2: A number of small development projects have been completed or are near completion to address the basic needs of conflict-hit communities in Mohmand Agency.

Additional political agent, Mohmand Agency, Iftikhar Ahmad Marwat said this while talking to media persons here on Wednesday. He said that the government had started work on construction of several small dams in different areas to provide potable water to people. He said that work on Yousafkhel, Aqrab Dag, Moto Shah and Khursheed dams in Ghalanai, Michnai and Prang Ghar would be completed soon, while several small bridges and links roads had been constructed.

He said that these bridges would benefit thousands of people of Pindiali, Anmbar, Danish Kol, Lachai, Dawazai and the surrounding villages. He said that modern machinery was being provided to save wastage of marble reservoirs during mining.— Correspondent
