KHAR, May 5: The death toll in the suicide attack that took place in a bazaar here on Friday rose to 29, official source said.Government offices, educational institutions and trade centres remained closed on Saturday as the administration announced a three-day mourning period in the Bajaur Agency.

Jehanzeb Dawar, head of the local health deportment, told Dawn that three people who were wounded in the attack died in the DHQ hospital on Saturday, raising the death toll to 29.

A tense calm prevailed in the agency as people buried the victims of the attack.

The curfew imposed in the region after the attack continued on Saturday.

Offices, markets and educational institutions remained closed. Public transport remained off the roads.

“We are facing a shortage of food items and the administration should lift curfew restrictions,” local people said.

According to an official, two suspects were arrested near Khar during a search operation. Weapons, grenades, suicide jackets and other explosive devices were seized, he added.

He said the suspects were shifted to an undisclosed place for investigation.

“The administration beefed up security in the area and deployed more troops. Several new checkpoints have been set up in Khar tehsil,” said another official.
