Man murders brother

ATTOCK, May 7: A man killed his brother over a land dispute in the limits of Basal police station.

Sources said Zamarud Khan allegedly attacked his brother Haji Safdar with a after exchanging harsh words with him over a land dispute and escaped from the scene.

Safdar died on the spot. Later, police handed over the body to the relatives after conducting postmortem and registered a murder case against the accused. — Correspondent

TAXILA, May 7:  A man committed suicide over some domestic dispute in Jinnah Colony in the limits of Wah Saddar police station on Monday.

Asad Mehmood, 17, reportedly exchanged hot words with his mother and locked himself in a room where he hanged from the ceiling fan with a rope.

His body was brought out after breaking the door of the room. The body was handed over for burial to the parents after autopsy at THQ hospital Taxila. According to police sources, the deceased was the only son of his parents.— Correspondent

Accident claims life

CHAKWAL, May 7: A man was killed while two others sustained serious injuries after a speeding van hit their motorcycle, police said on Monday.

Fahim Abid, a resident of Choa Syedan Shah along with his two friends was traveling on a motorbike when a van hit them on Choa-Kallar Kahar Road. Fahim died on the spot while his friends received serious injuries. — Correspondent

Watchman killed

FATEHJANG, May 7: A watchman of new airport area was killed some 12 km from here.

Abdul Razzaq, who had been working as watchman in the area for many years, was murdered by unknown persons the previous night.

Police have registered a murder case and started investigation.— Correspondent

Armyman’s wife robbed

RAWALPINDI, May 7: An army officer’s wife was robbed of Rs480,000 and gold ornaments by a couple who entered her apartment at Firdausi Lane here on Monday.

Col Tauqeer Abbasi told Civil Lines police that he was in his office when his wife informed him that she had been robbed.

He told police that as his wife opened the door after someone rang the door bell, a couple standing outside forced their way into the house and held her hostage. The robbers snatched the money and gold ornaments worth about Rs 0.6 million and escaped. — Staff Reporter

Smuggling bid foiled

TAXILA, May 7: Hassanabdal police on Monday foiled a bid to smuggle liquor and recovered over 60 bottles of it. Police sources said, acting on a tip off, a police party headed by SI Javaid intercepted a man and during search recovered over 60 bottles of liquor from the sack he was carrying with him. — Correspondent

POs, drug traffickers held

FATEHJANG, May 7: Five proclaimed offenders (POs) and three drug smugglers were arrested by Fatehjang police on Monday.

According to sources, Station House Officer Mohammad Akhtar along with a police party raided a house and arrested Mohammad Rizwan who was wanted to police in narcotics smuggling case and recovered from him 120 grams of charas.

Similarly, Ameer Khan, who was allegedly involved in a tampering case of vehicles; Rehana Bibi, PO in the case of kidnapping a youth; Jahan Dad and Mohammad Khan, proclaimed offenders in theft cases were also nabbed.

While Ibrar Ahmed, Jamil Ahmed and Mohammad Dawood were arrested and 410 grams charas was recovered from them. — Correspondent

Puppet show

ISLAMABAD, May 7: The puppeteers of National Puppet Theatre mesmerized the children here on Monday through a colourful show to inculcate cultural values in them.

Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) in collaboration with Ministry of National Heritage and Integration arranged the show for students of various educational institutions of twin cities.

Through animated expressions and vibrant costumes, the puppeteers presented tableaus and skits to highlight social issues besides imparting awareness about cultural and environmental problems.

The segments of regional dances and national songs compelled the children to participate.

In an attempt to revive the tradition of storytelling, popular folk tales were told through performances of puppets to create the interest of children in the imaginary stories conveying positive ideas.

The puppet show is a regular feature of the PNCA’s programmes to promote culture and traditions among the children. — APP

Fair to promote volunteerism

MUZAFFARABAD, May 7: The AJK chapter of Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) is organising a ‘fun fair’ on the occasion of World Red Cross/Red Crescent Day on Tuesday to raise awareness among the public regarding importance of volunteerism.

The fun fair, which will last from 11 am till evening in university college ground in the heart of main old city, will have stalls of town’s leading restaurants and eateries besides other amusements for the residents, PRCS Secretary Gulzar Fatima told newsmen here.

“We have over 7,000 volunteers at the moment but we want to increase our strength because we live in an area which is prone to natural calamities,” she said.

The PRCS-AJK, it may be mentioned here, has been operating from a dangerously shaky building, owned by the AJK Sports Board and Ms Fatima said they also needed a piece of land at a suitable location to build their office.

“If the government provides us land we can avail ourselves of the offers by some foreign Red Crescent societies regarding the construction of a purpose built office,” she said. — Staff Correspondent

House looted

ATTOCK, May 7:  Some unknown thieves made away with jewellery, cash, mobile phones and others valuables and electronic gadgets worth Rs 1.2 million from the house of a local resident Haji Mehmood Ahmed in Pindigheb.

The thieves broke the locks of the main gate while the residents were away last night. — Correspondent
