Dispute over melons claims life

SWABI, May 13: A petty dispute claimed life of one person here on Sunday, said police.

The incident occurred in Tordher village of Chota Lahor tehsil.

Brother-in-law of the deceased, Zafar Jamal, who hailed from Jalsai village, registered an FIR in Chota Lahor city police station, stating that Mr Jamal had already done a deal with the owner of a melon fields. But, he said attackers came there and threatened him of dire consequences if he didn’t pull back from the deal.

However, the deceased refused, on which the attackers opened fire killing him on the spot. The assailants escaped from the area.

The brother of the victim said Wazir Khan and Nawab Khan, two brothers from the Thano village, had allegedly shot dead Mr Jamal.—Correspondent

Ending thana culture

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, May 13: Deputy Inspector General of Police Qazi Jamilur Rehman has underlined the need for making drastic measures to end ‘thana’ culture and restore people’s trust in the police force.

“The people hesitate to visit the police stations and register complaints as they complain that the moharrir never shows respect to them,” the DIG said while speaking to newly appointed 29 moharrirs of police stations.

He asked moharrirs to help restore residents’ confidence and remove all negative impressions against the police by ensuring merit in the police force.

He reiterated that merit would be ensured while evaluating performance of police officials and added, the culture of nepotism and favouritism would be wiped out from the district police force.

He said the entire process of appointing moharrirs was carried out in a transparent manner by a committee of senior officials to conduct test and interview of suitable candidates among 166 policemen who had applied for these posts. —Correspondent

Pesco gets new chief

PESHAWAR, May 13: Abdul Latif Khan, the chief engineer operations Pesco, has assumed the charge of chief executive of the power utility.

Mr Latif Khan joined Wapda in 1976 as sub-divisional officer  after earning graduation in BSc honours from the University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar. During the past 35 years, he has served on key posts throughout the country.

According to a Pesco press release on Sunday, the provincial and federal governments recognised his services in the rehabilitation work after the earthquake of 2005 and flash floods of 2010 which had badly damaged the electricity distribution system.

Keeping in view his outstanding performance, academic and professional achievements, the government appointed Abdul Latif Khan as chief executive of Pesco.—Bureau Report

PPP activists join JI

TIMERGARA, May 13:  As many as 30 families of Haya Serai area of Maidan led by local PPP leaders Habibullah and Haji Muhibullah announced to quit their party and joined the Jamaat-i-Islami.

They made this announcement during a function organised by the JI at Haya Serai, which was addressed by district amir and former MNA Maulana Asadullah, JI nominated candidate for NA-34 Sahibzada Yaqub Khan, former MPA from Maidan Saeed Gul and Haji Abdul Rahman.

The JI leaders termed the joining of Habibullah and Muhibullah a big success for the party and thanked them. “The JI will sweep next general election in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and form government in the province,” claimed Maulana Asadullah.

He said the nation was fed up with the rulers and wanted immediate change. He said the JI was serving local communities though neither it was in power nor had any representation in assemblies.—Correspondent

Action against official sought

LANDI KOTAL, May 13: Relatives of a critically injured person in Landi Kotal have appealed to the Fata health directorate to initiate an enquiry against the medical superintendent for refusing the hospital ambulance to them.

Mr Shafiullah told Dawn that his uncle Haji Haider Shah was critically injured with a bullet fired accidentally while he was cleaning his rifle the other day.

He said they approached the medical superintendent of Landi Kotal hospital for the provision of an official ambulance as doctors at the said hospital had referred his uncle to Peshawar due to his critical condition.

“The MS told us that two ambulances were out on duty while the third one was spared for his personal use,” he said.

Shafiullah said they had to arrange a private vehicle to shift his injured uncle to Peshawar, though in a critical condition.

He demanded of the Fata health directorate officials to investigate the use of hospital ambulance for personal purpose by the concerned MS.—Correspondent

Health centres refurbished

PESHAWAR May 13: The government has equipped and rehabilitated district headquarters hospital and rural health centre in Wari tehsil of Upper Dir to enhance the service delivery of these health centres.

Official sources told APP on Sunday that the infrastructure of these health institutions was badly damaged due to IDPs influx and both hospitals were lacking basic medical equipments.

Therefore, the government equipped and rehabilitated both the hospitals by providing necessary medical equipments and furniture. 180 wooden chairs, 150 single beds with mattresses twenty heaters, 18 wheelchairs, twenty operation trolleys microscopes, anesthesia machine, generator, refrigerator, twelve geysers, five computers, printers, scanners and other medical equipments have been provided to the DHQ hospital.—APP
