Two students drown

ISLAMABAD, May 15: Two students drowned in a nullah in the capital’s rural area on Tuesday.

Police said six first-year students from a private college at Satellite Town went to Angoury Nullah at Satra Meel for picnic. Four of them went into the water for swimming but Naveedur Rehman and Chaudhry Hamza remained at the bank saying they did not know how to swim.

While playing near the water, Hamza slipped into the nullah and Naveed jumped into the water to rescue him. However, both were swept away.

Later, the police were informed who along with divers reached the spot and retrieved the bodies and shifted them to hospital.— Staff Reporter

Four held, MNA’s car found

ISLAMABAD, May 15: The city police arrested four persons, including a policeman from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, for allegedly snatching an MNA’s car.

The land cruiser (Sindh BD-8624) of Nazeer Ahmed, a PPP MNA, was snatched from his son Ghulam Murtaza on Margalla Road, F-7, on May 5. Mr Murtaza complained to the Kohsar police that the culprits in police commando uniform asked him to produce the vehicle’s documents saying it seemed to be non-customs paid.

They boarded the vehicle and asked Mr Murtaza to drive ahead for verification of the documents by their officers. However, later they pushed Mr Murtaza out and drove off in his vehicle.

The police formed a special team under the supervision of SP (city) Mohammad Ilyas which succeeded in arresting four eprsons - Syed Mohsin Ali, Asim Ali Javed, Iram Sehar and Yasir Khan, an official of the KP police - which led to the recovery of the vehicle.

The police suspected that the gang was also involved in other vehicle-snatching incidents in Islamabad. The accused were produced before a local court which gave them in police custody for two-day physical remand.—Staff Reporter

Three cops remanded

RAWALPINDI, May 15: A judge of Anti-Corruption Court on Tuesday remanded three police officials arrested in connection with Ratta Amral rape case, in two-day police custody till May 17.

The three police officials including deputy superintendent of police city circle Taimoor Khan, ex-SHO Ratta Amral sub-inspector Jawad Shah and the then investigating officer sub-inspector Zafar Gondal were arrested in connection with the rape case and tempering with the police record. They were produced in the Special Court of Justice Chaudhry Ameer Mohammad Khan for remand custody.

The Anti-Corruption Establishment’s (ACE) investigating officer Inspector Tanveer Ahmad sought ten-day remand from the court to recover the ‘scotch tape’ the accused police officials used to temper with the police record, but the court granted two-day remand to the ACE police.

The tempering of the record was pointed out by the top-level police team constituted by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab to investigate why the registration of the girl raping case was delayed.

As part of the investigation, the ACE’s investigating officer sought the record of Ratta police station which was reportedly tempered with by the police officials.

The three police officials were arrested on Monday by the ACE after their case was transferred to them by the local police for further proceeding.— Staff Reporter

Banned outfit booked

RAWALPINDI, May 15: Police on Tuesday registered a case against a banned outfit on the charge of ‘wall chalking’ at more than 20 points in the cantonment area.

The government has already imposed a ban on wall chalking and ordered the local administration and police to take legal action against those found violating it.

According to a police source, security officials spotted at least 21 points where wall chalking had been made allegedly by the banned outfit.— Staff Reporter

Garbage irks minister

RAWALPINDI, May 15: Taking notice of the garbage dumped around Punjab government’s social security hospital at I.J.

Principal Road near Pirwadhai Mor, Punjab Minister for Labour, Ahsanuddin Qureshi has asked Capital Development Authority (CDA) to remove it immediately.

“I will meet CDA chairman to solve the problem being faced by the patients, attendants and hospital staff as the foul smell emanating from the garbage is unbearable,” he stated this during his visit to the hospital on Tuesday.

The minister said that the government and the civic bodies should provide better facilities to the people and should not create civic issues for them. He said that the provincial government was making all-out efforts to redress the problems being faced by the patients in the province.

He said that the provincial government was working hard to provide better facilities to the workers. He said it had allocated millions of rupees for the education of their children and health of their families.— A Reporter
