KARACHI, May 18: Condemning the killing of its six workers during the past four days in Karachi, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Friday criticised the law-enforcement agencies for “standing silent spectator while the city is left at the mercy of criminals and terrorists”.

The MQM coordination committee said in a statement that the killing of six party workers, including former elected representatives, and several other innocent people in different areas of the city were part of a conspiracy to foment bloodshed and lawlessness and pit people against one another.

It regretted that while the MQM exercised restraint and patience over the killing of its workers, nothing substantial was being done by the law-enforcement agencies. “They are standing silent spectators while the city has been left at the mercy of criminal elements. Terrorists are roaming freely and undermining the peace,” the statement said.

It called upon the president, prime minister, interior minister and Sindh chief minister to order investigations into the killing of the MQM workers and other innocent people, and demanded arrest of the killers as soon as possible.

Hails SHC order

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has welcomed a Sindh High Court order regarding the holding of local government elections within 90 days.

The MQM coordination committee stated that the SHC decision would augur well for the progress and prosperity of the people, as the local bodies system helped the government solved their problems at grass-roots level on a priority basis, according to a statement issued on Friday.

It added that people were facing serious problems in the absence of the local government system.
