Two die in incidents
ISLAMABAD, May 23: A labourer was shot dead while another person drowned in Rawal Dam, police said on Wednesday.
In the first incident, Mumtaz Alam was murdered by unknown persons near his house at Azam Town in Sihala. The police said that last night, he received a call on his mobile and shortly afterwards left his house.
His family inquired him about the call and caller but he remained silent.
However, he was followed by his elder brother, Shah Alam. He was a few yards away from his house when four persons standing in the dark started firing at them. Mumtaz received multiple injuries at his chest and abdomen and fell on the earth. The attackers later escaped from the spot.
Fortunately, Shah Alam survived in the attack and remained unhurt. Later the injured was shifted to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
After the autopsy the body was handed over to the victim’s family who took it to their native area in Kohistan.
The police said that the victim’s family moved to Islamabad some 16 years back and settled in the area. They were the labourers by profession. They told the police that they had no enmity with anyone.
However, the victim’s brother said that he would approach the police to reveal some facts after returning from burial.
In another incident, a 21-year-old boy drowned in Rawal Dam. The police said the victim, Usman Tariq, along with his brother came to Rawal Dam for swimming.
As he went into deep water, he lost control and drowned. Later, the police reached the spot, fished the body out of the dam and shifted it to a hospital for legal process.—Staff Reporter
Police seek bullets for practice
RAWALPINDI, May 23: The district police have requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab to provide them three hundred thousand (0.3 million) bullets of different weapons for “firing practice” once in a year.
The firing practice would be carried out at firing range of Police Training School (PTS) Rawat because the Rawalpindi police cannot use its firing range because of increasing residential areas around it.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Headquarters Israr Abbasi when contacted said he had requested the inspector general of police office to provide them three hundred thousand bullets of each weapon for firing practice.
He said: “Firing practice for every police personnel is required once in a year.” The police have been using Sub-Machine Guns (SMGs), AK-47, G-3 rifles and pistols in addition to riot tools.
The SP said that the teargas shell firing was not included in the practice. The female police commandos associated with Elite Force will also go through firing practice; however the regular police female staff will be exempted from firing practice.
The firing practice will be started shortly after the consignment of bullets is received by the police.— Staff Reporter
