Motorcyclist killed

ISLAMABAD, May 24: A motorcyclist was killed afterhe was hit by a speeding passenger vehicle at I.J. Principal Road on Wednesday, police said.

Fahad Naseer, 23, was shifted to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In another incident a man was found dead in a nullah at I-10/1. The incident came to light when some passersby spotted the body in nullah and informed the police. The police reached the spot and shifted the body to hospital. — Staff Reporter

Doctor robbed

RAWALPINDI, May 24: A gunman entered a medical ward of Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) on Thursday and robbed a lady doctor of cash and two cellphones and managed to escape.

The robbery inside the hospital sent a wave of unrest among the doctors who staged a protest and demanded the hospital administration and police high ups to provide them security and arrest the culprit.

Dr Benish, a house officer, was on her duty at Medical Unit-1 of the BBH last night when a person knocked at the door of her room in the early hours of Thursday and asked for medical help.

When she opened the door, the stranger pulled out his pistol and snatched cash and two cellphones from her and ran away.— Staff Reporter

Conference at QAU

ISLAMABAD, May 24: The endocrinology laboratory of the Department of Animal Sciences of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) will organise a one-day conference on ‘Thyroid Gland: Understanding Basic and Clinical Aspects’ today (Friday) in connection with the World Thyroid Day.

The conference will focus on recent developments of basic and clinical aspects of the thyroid function and create public awareness about importance of this endocrine gland. The conference which will be started at 9:30am includes 3 technical sessions and a walk.

The venue will be the conference room of the Central Library, Quaid-i-Azam University. The walk will start at 4:30pm from the Central Library and after taking a round up to Bab-ul-Quaid will culminate at the university café. — A Reporter

40 vehicles impounded

ATTOCK, May 24: The city and traffic police impounded 40 bikes and motorcycle rickshaws on violation of traffic rules in a joint crackdown on Thursday.

The sources said that the police during checking near Katchery Chowk impounded about 15 bikes and 25 motorcycle rickshaw on different violations as some vehicles had no registration number while some drivers were plying their vehicles without driving licence as some of them were found underage.

Meanwhile, a number of rickshaw drivers and others gathered in front of the city police station to get the impounded vehicles released but the police officials refused to do so without legal formalities.

District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Hilal Khan appreciated police performance. —Correspondent

Seven auto thieves held

ISLAMABAD, May 24: The Rural Circle police arrested seven auto thieves, including two Afghans and recovered six cars and a motorbike from their possession, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

He said SP (Rural) Faisal Bashir Memon constituted teams headed by DSP Malik Tahir Mehmood to ensure arrest of car thieves.

The teams succeeded in arresting seven auto thieves besides recovering six vehicles and one motorbike from them including Cultus LWL-402, Corolla RLC-8592, Van CR-1803, Corolla LOM-8948, Corolla RM-723, RLE-1721 and a Honda motorbike ID-4182.

The nabbed outlaws have confessed to their involvement in the crime and disclosed to police that they took away the cars from the areas of Loi Bher, Sihala and Industrial Area police stations.— Staff Reporter
