Two killed in Karak incidents

KARAK, May 29: Two persons were killed and one was injured in different incidents here on Tuesday.

Police said an Afghan, Nasrullah Khan, was knocked down by a car while crossing a road in Karak city. He was shifted to district headquarters hospital from where he was referred to Peshawar, but died on the way. His relatives took his body to Afghanistan.

In the second incident, a man, Malik Nashta Noor, was shot dead by his rivals on Terri-Banda road. Banda Daud Shah police arrested the alleged killer Faridullah, resident of Deraki Banda.

In another incident, Mohammad Sadiq was seriously injured when his rivals opened fire over him on a petty dispute. The injured was taken to district headquarters hospital.

Latamber police arrested two persons, Mohammad Ashraf and Abdur Rehman, in the case.

Meanwhile, police arrested 11 proclaimed offenders and recovered arms from them during raids in different areas. —Correspondent  

Man with hashish arrested

PESHAWAR, May 29: Peshawar police on Tuesday seized 62 kilogram of hashish and arrested an alleged smuggler.

A police official said the accused Zakirullah of Nazampur was shifting the hashish from the tribal region to a safer place in Peshawar so that it could be smuggled to Punjab.

He said that the narcotics were recovered after getting a tip-off. The police intercepted the smuggler on a road near Mushtarzai in Badbher area. A case against the accused was registered at the Babdher police station. —Bureau Report

Flood management

PESHAWAR, May 29: Keeping in view possible flooding in the monsoon, the district administration has issued directives to the town municipal administrators to make available dewatering pumps and excavators for cleaning the main sewerage lines in the city.The directives were issued by the DCO Siraj Ahmed Khan on Tuesday. He said eleven excavators would be made available to clean the Shahi Katta (main sewerage line) to avoid overflow of water into the busy commercial and thickly populated areas in the monsoon.

Meanwhile, the administration on Tuesday sealed three factories of fake beverages in Phando Road, Murshadabad, and Landi Arbab areas.

The action was taken by a raiding party led by special magistrate Habibullah Arif. The owners of the factories were arrested.

Meanwhile, the administration also arrested nine tea stall owners in different areas for playing porno movies inside the cafés where most of the viewers were children. —Bureau Report  

Biodiversity conservation

MINGORA, May 29: A seminar on “Islam and Biodiversity Conservation” was organised at the University of Swat on the occasion of International Biodiversity Day here the other day.

Prof Dr Qibla Ayaz, vice-chancellor of the University of Peshawar, was the chief guest.

Dr Mohammad Jahanzeb Khan, vice-chancellor of the University of Swat, welcomed the guests and the participants.

The speakers highlighted importance of biodiversity and its conservation. They said conservation of biodiversity needed to be highlighted at the global scale and that ‘all of us have to play our role in this connection’.

Dr Qibla Ayaz specially focused on biodiversity of Swat district, saying institution like University of Swat were in the best position to step ahead and work for conservation of the biodiversity in the area. —Correspondent  

Jarma land allotment

KOHAT, May 29: The occupants of the state land at Jarma have requested the government to extend the deadline for making payments of the land.

The occupants have so far make payments for only 4,000 kanals of the 15,000 kanals of land by the end of the third deadline.

The chief minister had last year extended the date till May 22, 2012, but even then the people failed to make payments.

The district revenue officer had told the DCO and a jirga that the extension in the payment of the allotted land was the prerogative of the chief minister. But, the Jirga members asked the DCO to extend the date because the owners of the land were very poor and could not arrange the money on time. MPA Dr Iqbal Din Fana also sought more time.

But the DCO Shahidullah Khan made it clear that the orders of the chief minister could not be altered. —Correspondent

Training workshop

KHAR, May 29: A two-day training workshop for local journalists on conflict reporting concluded at Bajaur Press Club here on Tuesday.

Intermedia with the help of the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office organised the workshop in which more than 40 local journalists participated.

During the workshop, the journalists were given training in the basics of conflict reporting, report writing, journalistic ethics and safety journalism techniques. —Correspondent

Swimming day

PESHAWAR, May 29: Peshawar Public School and College Wasrask Road arranged its annual swimming day for small kids here on Tuesday. The children from 4 to 5 years old participated in the event.

Keeping in view the scorching heat the small kids were trained to use healthy methods to avoid sunstroke in the summer season. To inculcate self-confidence in them the school arranges a series of activities every year before commencement of the long summer break, according to a press release.

“Small kids scare many things like water, etc but as part of interactive and activity based learning children need these kinds of activities for exhibiting their hidden talent,” said Nadeema Parveen, principal of the school.

She added swimming was also an art which the small kids needed to master because they come to know how to take bath every day to avoid diseases. —Bureau Report
