NEW YORK: In a move to fight obesity in the United States, New York City plans to ban the sale of large sugary drinks, which will be a first nationwide.

New York’s Mayor, Michael Bloomberg who banned smoking in New York’s restaurants and public places in 2002 despite pressures from cigarette lobbies when he became city’s mayor is taking on powerful Coca Cola and such lobbies.

The ban would impose a 16-ounce limit on the size of sweetened drinks sold at restaurants, movie theatres, sports venues and street carts. It would apply to bottled drinks as well as fountain sodas.
