LAHORE, May 31: Like other parts of the country, the No Smoking Day was also observed in the provincial capital on Thursday.
Health and medical experts, non-government organisations and medical institutions organised seminars, walks and education sessions to sensitise the public about health risks associated with the tobacco use.
Sheikh Zayed, Ganga Ram, Mayo and Jinnah hospitals arranged lectures to mark the day.
Health experts were of the view that people had been defying laws blatantly despite the fact that public places had been declared smoke-free.
They said lack of implementing regulations was another major factor which had affected the efforts to enforce restrictions on smoking.
King Edward Medical University’s former vice-chancellor Prof Dr Zafarullah Khan inaugurated a free medical camp at Shalimar Hospital’s Outpatient Department-I.
The patients were facilitated through free lung tests, blood pressure and chest X-rays. Awareness literature and free medicines were also distributed among the patients.
Dr Khan, Dr Saleemul Zaman and Dr Osama Habib delivered healthcare awareness lectures.
Shalimar Hospital Chief Executive Dr Rashid Ahmad appreciated public interest and pharmaceuticals’ role in sensitising the public about tobacco affects.
Addressing a ceremony organised at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr Masood Sheikh stressed the need for holding healthy programmes and sessions to fight such a menace.
He said these activities would help spread maximum awareness about the dangers of smoking to make people think about the affects of tobacco consumption, killing millions of people worldwide every year.
Paramedics: Paramedics staged a rally on Thursday at Government Nawaz Sharif Hospital, Yakki Gate.
Dozens of paramedics reached the designated place from various public sector hospitals and staged a sit-in there for three hours.
They raised slogans against the Punjab administration and announced that they would continue their protest till the acceptance of demands.
Earlier, they observed a strike for three hours at the OPDs and diagnostic facilities of government hospitals and denied treatment to patients.
Addressing the rally, Punjab Paramedics Alliance Class-IV Chairman Malik Munir said it was a matter of concern that the Punjab government had turned a deaf ear to the legitimate demands of lower cadre employees.
He demanded allocation of a special budget for 90,000 paramedics who had low source of income to run their families.
The paramedics have been demanding service structure, health professional allowance and regularisation of contract employees.
