KARACHI, May 31: A group of HSC examination candidates and some outsiders manhandled a senior college teacher at the DJ Sindh Government Science College centre in reaction to what the college staffers said while resisting the use of unfair-means on Thursday.

A source in the college said that some examination staff stopped a candidate from using unfair means with the help of a mobile phone during the second shift of examination in a room at the college. The candidate did not like the courage of the teacher in question, who had also demanded surrendering of the cell phone used by the candidate.

Later, the student in question tried destroying some vehicles parked in the college premises, which was resisted by the college’s security staff. Things did not stop there, and a mixed group of candidates and outsiders crowded around another teacher, Shahzad Muslim, officiating as centre superintendent and was waiting for some examination official at the college gate after the conclusion of the session around 5.30pm.

It was learnt that the hooligans beat him up hitting him with stones and sticks. The police was not present at the time of the incident, said a teacher.

The vice-principal of DJ College, Dr Mohammad Arshad, condemned the incident and expressed his dissatisfaction over the security situation.

Talking to Dawn, he said that he had already informed the chairman of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi that he and his staff were not ready to conduct any further examination at the college in the given situation when teachers the found themselves helpless. Further papers of the ongoing first phase of HSC examinations were scheduled at the centre on June 4.

Dr Arshad said that an FIR had also been lodged with Aram Bagh police in regard to the incident. Commissioner House has also been informed about the incident, he added.

President of Sindh Professors and Lecturers’ Association, Sindh, Prof Athar Hussain, has expressed his concern over the manhandling of college teachers and said that the repeated incidents of manhandling of college teachers during the HSC examination spoke volumes about the inadequate security arrangements.

He said that SPLA will convene a meeting at DJ College on Friday to review the participation of college teachers in the second phase of HSC examination commencing on June 8.
