PARIS, June 1: World champion Mark Cavendish, who won three stages at the Giro d'Italia, will resume competition at the four-stage Ster ZLM Toer on June 14-17.

Cavendish finished the Giro barely a week ago with yet more stage glory added to his impressive tally but missed out on his goal of the sprinters' red jersey by just a point.

Now the Briton, who is still celebrating having become a father for the first time, will set his sights on his next two objectives — the Tour de France and the Olympic Games.

Isle of Man sprinter Cavendish has won a total of 20 stages at the Tour de France and last year brought home the sprinters' green jersey for the first time.

He will aim for more of the same in the three-week epic, from June 30-July 22, before turning his attention to the men’s Olympic road race on July 28.

While Sky team-mate Bradley Wiggins gets to gauge his form ahead of a renewed assault on the Tour de France yellow jersey at the Dauphine Libere, Cavendish will top up his condition at the Dutch-Belgian event.

Cavendish will be accompanied by riders used to working for him in the lead-up to sprints: Austrian Bernhard Eisel, Britons Jeremy Hunt and Ian Stannard and Australian Chris Sutton.—AFP
