NEW DELHI: Indian sports officials have expressed shock at conditions in the Olympic training camp for the nation’s wrestlers, with rotten fruit being prepared in a dirty kitchen, a report said Tuesday.

Former swimmer Khajan Singh, a member of the sports ministry’s monitoring panel, visited the camp at Sonepat, 45 kilometres north of New Delhi, where the wrestlers are training ahead of next month’s London Games.

“I was shocked to see rotten fruits used to make juice and unhygienic conditions in the kitchen,” Singh, a silver-medallist at the 1986 Asian Games, told the Hindustan Times.

“There is no dietician or medical expert to oversee the quality of food being served.”

The wrestlers had not complained because they feared being thrown out of the camp, Singh explained.

Among the wrestlers training at the camp was Sushil Kumar, who won a bronze at the Beijing Olympics and is a rare medal prospect for the London Olympics, which begins on July 27.

With 1.2 billion people and a rapidly growing economy, India should be an emerging Olympic powerhouse but it achieved a meagre haul of just one gold and two bronzes at Beijing 2008.

Sports bosses set up an organisation called “Olympic Gold Quest” in 2001 to improve the nation’s record, but under-investment in facilities and coaching for athletes remains a severe problem.

  1. Disgraceful! I hope they correct this!

  2. Oh…my …India ………..negative western culture koo too apna liya ……..par……….positive sporting culture koo buhol gyaa yaar…….keya kareh "control hi nahi hota yaar……………….keya isee liyeh ….esko "Incredible India " Kahte hi………..

  3. Don't understand Mr. Naresh Sharma's point. I am from India. How can anyone, Indians included win medals without having proper facilities? Is he trying to say that Indians are somehow superior to others? If that is the case, where are all the Olympic gold medals despite poor facilities and a billion plus people?

I hate to disappoint you Mr. Sharma. We are all human and we are all equal – Indians, Pakistanis, Chinese…..all. If you don't believe me just learn from what China has accomplished with better training and better facilities. From being near the bottom, it gave the US a run for its money in medal count at the Beijing Olympics. So too will India by the sheer size of its population if there is proper training and facilities for athletes.

  4. Hahahahah… This is so funny
Well i feel bad for the Indians who treat their own sportsmen like shit
if this was done with tendulker it would have been a war zone
oh Well… this shows tyhe standard of so called Indians..

  5. Pakistan, India do not lack talent , what we lack is a proper structure, and this is what cost us victories, India is gradually improving it and Pakistani sports is declining

    A Pakistani

  6. Indians can still win medals without having any proper facilities

    • What garbage are you talking Naresh Sharma. I am an Indian too, and this news is shocking. It does not matter if India wins or looses in game, we are talking about living human beings here. You sir, like most Indians feed on false pride.

    • Then why they r not doing it???
Government need to invest, provide proper coaching, training facilities, allowances etc….

    • OR W/OUT FOOD?

  7. As athletes I am sure they monitor everything they put in their mouths. Therefore, so should the people resonsible for preparing the food.

Good think this came to light now. Would be a shame if athletes miss out on success in London due to food poisoning from rotting fruit and veggies.
