A census bulletin issued here yesterday revealed that there are 874 spinsters and 19,657 confirmed bachelors in the city. The persons listed under the column ‘Never Married’ are all over the age of 45 years. The total number of spinsters and confirmed bachelors in Pakistan was over two lakh in 1961, including about 44,000 unmarried females and over 160,000 unmarried males over the age of 45 years.
The number of confirmed bachelors and spinsters in some other cities of Pakistan is: Lahore 3,401 bachelors and 465 spinsters; Rawalpindi 1,196 bachelors and 855 spinsters; and Dacca 218 bachelors and 31 spinsters.
Karachi also tops the list of hosting the highest number of persons claiming to be over 100 years of age. Out of over 54,000 people all over the country who claimed to be centenarians, Karachi had 1,312 of them, including 591 females; Lahore claimed 1,117 and in Dacca the number was 274, including 138 women.
Another striking feature in this respect is that out of over 54,000 centenarians, over 46,000 lived in rural areas. Among the centenarians, over 30,000 were males and over 23,000 females. Of these, over 31,000 live in West Pakistan and over 22,000 in East Pakistan. — Staff Correspondent
