Levies man killed ‘by mistake’

CHARSADDA, June 6: A Levies force trooper was ‘mistakenly’ gunned down by FC personnel in lower Kurram on Wednesday.Sources told Dawn that a Levies man, Kabir Hussain, who was guard of a former subedar major of Levies force, Majeed Khan, was moving in plain clothes in a street when FC personnel opened fire on him on finding him suspicious. He was killed on the spot.

Sources said that the man was from a poor family and was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard at his home town in Balyameen in lower Kurram. — Correspondent

Wapda employees observe sit-in

PESHAWAR, June 6: Wapda employees took out a protest procession and observed a sit-in outside the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly building here on Wednesday against the delay in payment of their one month honorarium, and hard area allowance.

The protesters were led by Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union leaders including Gohar Taj, Haji Mohammad Iqbal, Gohar Ali Gohar, Mustajab Khan, Ali Said and others. Holding banners and placards inscribed with their demands they also criticised the government for failure to redress their grievances.

While speaking on the occasion, the central chairman of Gohar Taj said that the government was using delaying tactics to accept their demands but the employees would also not remain silent and continue their struggle. — Bureau Report

Woman, son shot dead

MARDAN, June 6: A woman and her son were killed when unidentified assailants opened firing on them outside a hotel on Mardan-Malakand road here on Wednesday, police said.

Officials of the city police station quoted Nazir, manager of the hotel, as saying that the victims had booked a room at the hotel on Tuesday evening. He told police they were about to leave the hotel in their car after breakfast when two unidentified motorcyclists opened firing on them, killing both on the spot.

As per the police preliminary investigation, the woman was identified as Saira Haq, 45, and her son Umar Nawab, 28, residents of Fazalabad Mian Kelly tehsil Takht Bhai. The motive behind the killing was stated to be a property dispute. — Correspondent

Land dispute claims two lives

PESHAWAR, June 6: Land dispute claimed lives of two people in Peshtakhara area in the suburbs of Peshawar on Wednesday.

According to complainant Yar Mohammad, his father Zabita Khan and brother Zaiwar Khan were working in the fields when armed men opened indiscriminate fire on them. Both were killed on the spot.

He alleged that some of his relatives including Izzat Khan, Kamal, Lakhkar, Fazal and Manzoor were involved in the double murder as they had a claim over the piece of land and had threatened to kill them. Police have registered a case and are investigating. — Bureau Report

Chemistry workshop

TIMERGARA, June 6: The department of chemistry, University of Malakand, arranged a workshop on “Innovation in chemical education (ICE-2012” sponsored by the Higher Education Commission, said a press release issued here on Wednesday.

Participants from colleges and schools attended the workshop. The chief guest of this occasion was UoM Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Rasul Jan. The chief organiser in his address welcomed the scientists and participants. Two technical sessions were held and each session comprised of two lectures.

The lectures were delivered by Prof Dr Fida Mohammad, Prof Dr Mohammad Iqbal Bhanger, Prof Dr Iftikhar Ahmad and Dr Ezzat Khan, the press release said. — Correspondent

Man kills sister

KARAK, June 6: A woman was killed allegedly by her brother in an honour-related incident here on Wednesday.

Police said that the slain woman was attacked by her brother inside her house in the Aral Toradam Banda. The victim had married her first cousin two years ago on her own free will. The police quoted the mother-in-law of the victim as saying that Abdur Rehman came to her house and opened indiscriminate fire on his sister, killing her on the spot.  — Correspondent
