ISLAMABAD, June 10: A consultation on the proposed ‘National Food Safety, Animal and Plant Health Regulatory Authority’ will begin here on Monday.
The consultation will lead to an improved understanding of the requirements for an integrated sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) control system in Pakistan by the decision-makers of federal and provincial governments, agro-food industry, producers and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The deliberation will help in making recommendations to finalise the proposed regulatory authority. It is expected that the draft bill will be finalised by June 18. The federal minister for national food security and research will open the consultation.
The consultation is being organised by the National Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (Naphis) under the ministry of national food security and research and supported by a joint programme of European Union and UN Industrial Development Organization (Unido) under the second phase of Trade Related Technical Assistance Programme (TRTA). The Naphis has developed the draft regulatory authority bill under TRTA project. — Amin Ahmed
