Man caught red-handed

ISLAMABAD, June 13: A man was caught allegedly trying to rape a minor girl at Jasmine Garden on Wednesday, police said. Some visitors informed Aabpara police that they had caught a man who tried to rape a girl. Shortly after getting information, the police reached the spot and arrested him.

Meanwhile, father of the girl also reached the spot. The people who caught the man told police that they heard the girl’s cries and rushed to rescue her.

Later, the accused along with the victim and her father was taken to the police station for further legal course.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused said he had a tailoring shop in Aabpara Market.

The victim’s father, a resident of Sector G-6/1-2, said his nine-year-old daughter went to the market, but did not return as was expected. Later, he received a call from a friend who informed him that his daughter was in Jasmine Garden, he added.

On his complaint, the police registered a case and put the accused behind bars. The victim was taken to the hospital for medical examination.—Staff Reporter

Two POs arrested

ATTOCK, June 13: The district police arrested two proclaimed offenders (POs) who were involved in murder cases on Wednesday.

The sources said Bahtar police arrested Zubair Khan from Pakpattan district, who had allegedly killed a village fellow Azam Khan. Since then he was at large. However, the police traced him through his mobile phone and arrested him.

In another attempt, Injra police arrested Saifullah allegedly involved in a double murder case. The Punjab police had fixed Rs50,000 head money on him.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Ameen, the resident of Baryar village, reported to Saddar police that he was attacked by three village fellows Haji Ahmed Khan, Masood Ahmed and Noor Zaman with weapons over a minor dispute.

Similarly, Mohammad Munir, resident of Kinal Village, reported to New Airport police, that he was allegedly attacked by a village fellow Mehtab Ali with a knife over a petty issue. Separate cases were registered by the respective police stations. —Correspondent

AIOU students stage demo

MURREE, June 13: Scores of students staged a protest demonstration against out-of-course paper of Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL) of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU).

The protesting students gathered in front of Murree Press Club on Wednesday to register their anger as they were of the view that future of hundreds of students was put at stake by the AIOU administration.

The affected students, mostly teachers of various local schools, told the reporters that the English Department gave the paper to the students of Language Skills-I with questions of Language Skills-II. The students said that they could not attempt even a single question in the paper.

They appealed to the vice-chancellor of the university to look into the matter and save the future of hundreds of students who had been affected by the mistake of the English Department. —Correspondent

Lawyers’ strike

TAXILA, June 13: The legal fraternity of Taxila and Wah Cantt on Wednesday boycotted the court proceedings and observed complete strike to condemn the remarks of Malik Riaz against Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and expressed solidarity with him.

The strike call was given by Pakistan Bar Council (PBC). Later, during a meeting held at the office of Taxila bar association, the lawyers said the present era was no different from Musharraf’s regime in so far as the ruler’s behaviour to higher judiciary was concerned.

They said that they stood by CJP and would not allow anyone to defame him. —Correspondent

Couple booked for theft

ATTOCK, June 13:  The city police registered a case against a couple on the charge of stealing valuables from a neighbouring house.

Sources said a local resident, Mohammad Nouman Ahmed, reported to the police that he along with his family went to his native village after handing over the house keys to the neighbours.

On return, he found Rs30,000 cash and jewellery missing from the house.

The complainant nominated the neighbouring couple as suspects. —Correspondent

Courts cheated

ISLAMABAD, June 13: Some fraudsters tried to cheat the city’s lower court by submitting forged registry of lands as surety for seeking bail of robberies accused, police said on Wednesday.

Amjad Ali, a record keeper at senior civil judge of the city district and sessions court, approached the Margalla police with the complaint that three persons submitted forged land registry as surety to the court for seeking bail of an accused.

The accused was arrested by Bhara Kahu police for his alleged involvement in a robbery.

However, the courts before issuing the bail orders asked its staff to verify the registry from the authority concerned and verification with the tehsildar and patwari revealed that the original owners had sold the land a couple of years back and it was transferred in the name of new buyer.

Over the disclosure the judge directed registration of a case against the three persons.

In a similar incident, a man submitted a forged registry to the court as a surety for the release of a robbery accused arrested by Shahzad Town police.

Police have registered separate cases against the cheaters.—Staff Reporter
