KARACHI, June 13: A division bench of the Sindh High Court issued notices to the provincial home secretary, police chief and other officials in two separate petitions against detention of two persons.

One of the petitions was filed by Mrs Shamim, a resident of North Nazimabad, against the alleged detention of her son, Muhammed Tariq.

She stated that her son had gone to Golimar on May 20 and was taken into custody by personnel of the law-enforcement agencies. She said she approached the area police to ascertain his whereabouts but the officials present there feigned ignorance. She prayed to the court to direct the respondent police officials to produce her son in court and inform it if he was booked or arrested in any criminal case.

The second petition was filed by Bacha Khan against the alleged detention of his son, Abdul Wali Khan, since June 11.

The petitioner stated that his son had gone to People’s Chowrangi within the remit of the Taimuria police station and had been arrested by the police. He alleged that the police demanded Rs10,000 for his son’s release and threatened to book him in some criminal case if the money was not paid.

The petitioner prayed to the court to direct the police to produce his son in court.

The bench headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar issued notices to the respondents as well as the federal and provincial law officers and put off the hearing of both cases to a date to be fixed by the court’s office later. The bench also directed the respondents to file their respective comments on the two petitions.—Staff Reporter
