ISLAMABAD, June 15: Attorney General Irfan Qadir on Friday assured of undertaking the task assigned to him by the Supreme Court of handling the controversy revolving around allegations of a business deal between property tycoon Malik Riaz and the Chief Justice’s son, Dr Arsalaan Iftikhar.

On Thursday, a two-judge Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain had expressed expectations on a suo motu case that the AG would set the machinery of the state in motion so that all those who might have committed any illegal acts, including Malik Riaz, his son-in-law Salman Ahmed Khan and Dr Arsalaan Iftikhar, were pursued and brought to book with the full force and rigours of the law.

A statement issued by the office of the AG here on Friday stated the AG would soon hold meetings with Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau, Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari, Secretary Law Yasmeen Abbasey, Interior Secretary Siddiq Akbar Baloch, Director General of Federal Investigative Agency Fayyaz Leghari and Islamabad Inspector General of Police Bani Ameen.

In these meeting, the AG stated, he would be having consultations with these officers to ensure transparent accountability for determination of commission of acts (if any) of corruption or corrupt practices committed by Malik Riaz and family, Dr Arsalaan Iftikhar and family and Salman, along with other persons connected with the allegations which might eventually be the subject of inquiry or investigation by relevant authorities.

The purpose of these deliberations, the statement said, was to explore the possibility of constituting a broad-based investigation team so as to rule out the possibility of any influence on either side.

Hopefully, the AG said, a decision would be taken by him shortly so that the state machinery was set in motion as per the desire of the apex court.

In taking the final decision, the AG said, he would be guided by the consideration highlighted by the Supreme Court in its judgment in the Dr Arsalaan case to ensure that the matter was entrusted to officers of an impeccable character.
