OSLO: Myanmar democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi said on Friday her country was at the start of the road to reconciliation as she arrived here to finally deliver her Nobel lecture, more than two decades after winning the peace prize.

Suu Kyi promised to negotiate this road “in the spirit of national reconciliation”.

“We're certainly not at the end of the road. By no means. We are just starting out,” she said at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, adding that the way ahead was bound to be filled with obstacles and twists.

Suu Kyi arrived in Norway earlier on Friday to deliver her Nobel lecture. She won the peace prize in 1991 for her dogged campaign to free her people.

“I thank the people of Norway and all others who have helped us along this very difficult path,” she said.

She reiterated her call for responsible foreign investment in her country, also known as Burma, as many western powers are rolling back sanctions in light of political reforms.

“Human-rights friendly, democracy-friendly investment is what we're looking for,” she said.—AFP
