fire at godowns: A major fire broke out in cloth godowns in Azam Cloth Market early Saturday, burning down cloth worth millions and damaging badly the two-storey building.
No human loss or injury was reported in the blaze which played havoc with the nerves of firefighters who battled the flames the whole day.
Yakki Gate SHO Abid Hussain said the blaze erupted in the godown situated on the first storey around 1:15am because of sparks in the UPS. He said frequent power outages apparently created sparks in the UPS.
He said the fire also spread to godowns of another trader Sheikh Riaz on the second storey.
The SHO said that firefighters had to bring pipes to the spot from narrow streets, adding the cloth lying at two storeys was completely burnt.
A Rescue 1122 official said the blaze continued erupting in the building intermittently, making it difficult for firefighters to douse it completely till Saturday evening.
