For a few seconds, i was there - looking down at the rally and the queen, at the tea party where she must have smiled politely and in front of Abdus Salaam's tombstone when radicals disowned him, even though he was perhaps the only Pakistani till date to receive a Noble.
It was a harsh article, written beautifully, with enough gentle caution and a rude kick!

Not all is lost if LUMS can be seen to be unafraid of the right wing medieval forces and indeed establish the Chair in honor of Prof. Abdus Salaam. Let the function is attended by the luminaries in the Government and say a few words of gratitude for what the Professor had done for the South Asian Community of Scientists in his lifetime.
When the plane landed in Pakistan with the coffin bearing the body of the Professor there were none from the then government of Pakistan to receive him at the airport. One can only hope that things have changed from the times of Zia (Zulmat ko Zia kya kehna!) when he decreed that Khuda be banned and only Allah be used when saying Khuda Haafiz!

The disrespect showed to Abdus Salaam is an indicator of how corrosive Islam has been for Pakistan. Pakistanis are of overwhelming Hindu heritage. their culture is South Asian, Hindu. Hindu scriptures were written in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. Because of geopgraphical and topographical reasons there were no boundaries. What i called the Indus culture was also the culture of North India. the writer of the Sanskrit grammar was a Pathan named Pannini. Then came the Arab system called Islam. It was an attempt to cure Arab society. It did not. It has been even worse for Pakistan. Pakistanis are now single mindedly trying to forget all vestiges of their Hindu past and trying to become full fledged Arabs.
