LARKANA, June 28: An under-trial prisoner died and another inmate suffered injuries when a portion of a barrack’s ceiling fell onto them in the central prison here on Thursday.

The prisoners were standing in queue in Barrack No.7 to give the day’s headcount when the accident occurred, injuring Bagh Ali Narejo, 65, and Imdad Ali Lashari, 35.

They were rushed to the Chandka Medical College Hospital where Bagh Ali Narejo died before getting medical help while the condition of Imdad was stable now, said Aijaz Haider, superintendent of the central prison.

He said the late Bagh was a resident of Madeji and was involved in a murder case lodged in 2004 at Dhamraho police station.

He had been at large since then and was arrested and sent to jail on March 6 this year, he said.

The injured prisoner is a resident of Mujawar Lashari (Bakrani) village and is currently facing charges of keeping illegal arms under section 13-D, according to sources.

The Barrack No.7 was constructed in 2008 and was recently renovated, said the jail superintendent.
