LAHORE, July 3: A judicial magistrate on Tuesday sent Khalid Rauf, owner of the company that had constructed Harbanspura bridge, to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

North Cantonment police had registered a case against him after the bridge collapsed and a truck driver lost his life.

It was alleged that the bridge collapsed due to substandard construction.

The investigation officer told the court that physical custody of the accused was no more required and he should be sent to jail. At this, the court sent the accused on judicial remand.

Education boards:  The Lahore High Court on Tuesday restrained all education boards in Punjab from collecting “processing fee” from students of private institutions.

A private school’s student, Khalid Mahmood, filed a petition and challenged the act of collecting the processing fee.

The petitioner submitted the Punjab government had exempted students of public institutions from registration, admission and processing fees but the same was being collected from private school students. He said the act of the boards was discriminatory and violation of fundamental rights.

Issuing an interim order, the court barred the education boards from collecting the processing fee and sought replies from the Punjab education secretary and boards’ chairmen.
