Workers threaten to quit ANP

SWABI, July 9: ANP office-bears from Baja village threatened on Monday to tender en bloc resignations if the party district leadership failed to meet their demands within ten days.

Baja is one of four main congested villages in the PK-36, Swabi-VI constituency. ANP MPA Sarfaraz Khan Jadoon was elected from here in elections 2008.

Local leaders and workers of the party alleged the lawmaker did not give any attention to their demands. They said the party’s provincial president should take notice of the deprivation of the area, adding if Mr Sarfaraz and district leadership failed to meet their demands they would have no option but to say goodbye to their party. —Correspondent

Two contractors expelled

KOHAT, July 9: The Kohat division contractors association has expelled two senior office-bearers for secretly opening tenders and allotting contracts worth Rs40 million with the connivance of government officials.

Speaking at a meeting presided over by Haji Sher Afzal on Monday the contractors said the association’s president Iqbal and secretary general Mukhtiar had awarded tenders without their notice.

Mr Sher Afzal said they had nominated Haji Younis new president and Alam Zeb secretary general, adding nobody would open tenders without the notice of the association in future. He demanded of the district coordination officer to order inquiry into the scam. —Correspondent

Man shot dead for honour

MANSEHRA, July 9: A man was killed in the name of honour in Garhi Habibullah on Monday.

The father of the victim, in his FIR lodged with the Garhi Habibullah police station, said two men shot dead his son while he was going to take passengers in his jeep in the morning. He said daughter of one of the accused had married his son, which had infuriated his daughter-in-law’s family.

The Garhi Habibullah police were making efforts to apprehend the culprits. —Correspondent

Power projects shelved

KOHAT, July 9: Wapda’s construction wing has delayed work on many important schemes worth millions of rupees in Kohat division.

MNA Khursheed Begum, while talking to Dawn on Monday, pointed out that the provincial and federal governments had sanctioned the money for several electricity projects for Kohat division. But the work on these schemes could not be initiated which might cause problems to the people in the coming holy month of Ramazan.

She assured that she would take up the matter with the chairman Wapda and the federal minister for water and power so that important development schemes were completed before the start of Ramazan. —Correspondent

Rain lashes Dera

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, July 9: A woman was killed and eight others were injured when a severe windstorm and rain lashed parts of Dera Ismail Khan on the night between Sunday and Monday.

The storm followed by a torrential rain uprooted trees and electricity poles and blew away signboards in the Dera city and suburbs.

According to officials and residents, the house of an IDP family collapsed in Dera city due to the severity of the wind, killing a woman and injuring her six-year-old son. Locals said seven others were also injured in roof collapse incidents in the area.

Many parts of the city were left without electricity as the windstorm played havoc with the transmission lines.

The floodwater badly damaged a bridge on Tank-Bannu road, suspending traffic. —Correspondent

Demo against Fata MP

PESHAWAR, July 9: A group of residents of Parachinar on Monday held a protest demonstration at Sher Shah Suri Road against local MNA Haji Munir Orakzai for not taking interest to solve basic problems of his voters.

Holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans seeking solution to their problems, the demonstrators shouted against the concerned MNA and asked him to step down.

Talking to reporters they said the MNA before the last elections had promised to solve all the basic problems but after his election as MNA he forgot all his commitments.The MNA, they alleged had even failed to visit his constituency and had shifted to Islamabad, living luxurious life. —Bureau Report

Miners demand compensation

KARAK, July 9: The workers of salt mines of Karak observed a daylong strike to protest against the non-payment of compensation to their colleagues who were killed and injured while working in the mines.Addressing a meeting of the miners here on Monday, labour union district president Malik Naveed said sometime back their colleague Murad Ali was killed in Bahaderkhel salt mines, but the family was not paid any compensation.

He said so far about 100 miners had been killed and about 50 injured during work at the mines but they had not been properly compensated.

The labour leader said only Rs10,000 were paid to the dead and Rs4,000 to the injured miners which was sheer injustice with their families. —Correspondent

Welfare of orphans

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, July 9: A seminar on the Probation Payroll and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Protection Act 2010 was held in the district courts to stress the need of taking concerted steps for the welfare of orphans and poor children.

The seminar was attended by the district and sessions judge Zarqaish Sani, prosecution officer, jail superintendent, social welfare officer and representatives of ministry of human rights and journalists.

Briefing the participants, Farasatullah advocate, representative of the ministry of human rights, said government had introduced a comprehensive law to protect the rights of children. He added it was the responsibility of every civilian to coordinate his efforts for successful implementation of these laws. —Correspondent

Football tournament final

PESHAWAR, July 9: Khyber Agency and Peshawar will clash in the final of the SP Kalam Khan Memorial Football Tournament at the Qayum Sports Complex today (Tuesday).

Peshawar handed defeat to Nowshera 1-0 in the first semi-final on Monday. Khyber Agency won against strong Abbottabad squad 2-0 which will now play Peshawar in final of the first edition of SP Kalam Khan football inter-academy under-17 football tournament.

The Malik Saad Sports Trust has organised the event to pay commemoration to the police officer Kalam Khan who was killed in a suicide attack in March in Peshawar.

Khyber Agency’s forward Wisal Khan scored both goals for his team. —Bureau Report
