KARACHI: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior Rehman Malik on Tuesday announced that he had resigned from his Senate membership, DawnNews reported.
Speaking to media representatives in Karachi, Malik said that he had tendered his resignation on Monday.
“I have decided to resign from the Senate and have conveyed my decision to the party leadership. I am willing to fulfil any other responsibility which my party will assign me,” he told reporters in Karachi.
Malik moreover said that he had renounced his British citizenship and that the dual nationality bill had not been proposed in order to facilitate him.
“I decided to shun my membership because people are attaching the proposed amendment in the dual nationality law with me,” Malik said.
“So I have given up my membership and will now openly campaign for this bill for the sake of 1.2 million fellow overseas Pakistanis.”
He also showed documents to reporters pertaining to his having renounced British citizenship and said he would not acquire citizenship of a foreign country in the future.
The adviser admitted that he had established a company in the UK during exile, however, before stepping into practical politics, he had resigned from his business positions on directions from former premier Benazir Bhutto.
Malik said the government had always shown respect towards the judiciary and towards orders issued by the courts.
He further said that he also wanted to resign from the position of adviser but was stopped by the president from doing so.
Earlier in June, a Supreme Court bench hearing the dual nationality case had suspended Malik’s Senate membership. As a consequence, he had also lost the coveted position of federal interior minister.
He was later appointed by President Asif Ali Zardari as Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior.
Last month, the Supreme Court temporarily suspended MP Farahnaz Ispahani, the wife of Pakistan’s sacked ambassador to Washington and an advisor to Zardari. She holds dual Pakistani-US nationality.

I have spent pretty long time here in the Scandinavian countries and believe me,
Inshallah, there is still golden opportunity to fetch very honest, highly qualified
God-feared honest personalities,serving universities of sweden,Danmark,Norway,
who are serving their residing countries to the best of their abilities, mostly still argue
for Pakistan and Pakistanis golden future through amending present educational
system and feth all these laurels and experienced scans into Pakistan. They very much
advocate and support the young man, Imran khan who had been oxford-university student
and(Inshallah) not be future Mr.13%.
May ALLAH (SWT) Bless Pakistan.
He got enough now and therefore resigning. From the snate but his eyes are on the next position. Watch what will he does for Pakistani people. Actually it does not make any difference he he leaves because another corrupt and uneducated person will take his position. Root official should resign. One rotten fish destroys the whole country.
Why not have a referendum; let the people of Pakistan and the overseas Pakistanis voice their opinion and preference. It is amazin and mind boggling to see the selfishness of the present government. Instead of righting the wrong; they prefer to wrong the right. What surprises me is the parties like MQM who know very well that this bill is wrong; yet they have opted to support it. Do the right the people.
Let the people of Pakistan who grew and lived in Pakistan run Pakistan. Overseas Pakistanis had enjoyed a good ride by earning good money & no doubt Pakistan has benefited from it; Let us not make Pakistan their toy for joy in retirement. I am an expatriate who has taken the oath to serve my adopted country but will always wish well and work to serve my motherland – Pakistan!
REHMAN: PLEASE LEAVE PAKISTAN, LEAVE PAKISTANI'S ALONE, GO TO YOUR WIFE AND KID, THEY NEED YOU, HAVE MERCY ON US
He needs money only. loves to loot
Great news …now Rehman Malik should leave the country.
I dont agree with dual nationalities
One nationality and you are in the government or else out of it….
Mr. Malik , AJ's democracy will survive in Pakistan without you. I am one of those 1.2 millions Pakistanis who has foreign nationality (US), have no desire to hold any elected position in Pakistan. I can't imagine to have divided loyalty. But you can. Knowing that law did not allow but you lied and became the member of of Pak legislative body.
That's a mistake. Rehman Malik should renounce his Pakistani nationality and stay out of this country. That would really be a service to this poor suffering nation.
Well said
British nationality can be renounced……. and taken back, once.
Can Mr. Malik announce that he has *permanently* renounced his British Nationality ?
