GUJRANWALA, July 14: The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) vice chancellor inaugurated the new campus building in People’s Colony here on Saturday.

The building is completed at a cost of Rs100 million on 12 kanals provided by the City District Government of Gujranwala.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Dr Nazir Ahmad Sangi said it was the 16th campus which had its own building in the country.

The VC announced that a technical campus would be established to improve skills of industrial workers of Gujranwala, Gujrat and Wazirabad.

He appealed to the influential people to help the university spread its network to deprived and neglected areas.

REJECTED: The Lahore High Court registrar on Saturday rejected the land acquired for the construction of courts of Kamoki tehsil near Sadhoki due to security risk and gave an approval for acquiring 65 kanals near Kamoki.

He directed Assistant Commissioner Sumaira Zaheer to contact the Punjab government for its approval.

It is stated that initially the land was acquired near Ghunianwala village, Sadhoki, but it was far from Kamoki city. LHC Registrar Sohail Nasir objected to the construction of courts there due to security risk.

CHAMBER: The Gunjranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry has criticised EOBI for issuing notices to industrialists and harassing them following intruding in their units without any lawful authority.

Speaking at a meeting here on Saturday, chamber president Malik Zaheerul Haq said industrialists were paying social security and all better facilities to labourers in accordance with the law, but the department was harassing them by issuing notices without any justification.

DACOITY: Dacoits made off with cash and gold ornaments worth Rs2 million from the house of a jeweller on Jinnah Road on Saturday.

Five armed men forced their entry into the house of Bao Ilyas in Bhekopur locality and held women hostage at gunpoint. They collected Rs200,000 in cash, gold ornaments worth Rs1.8 million and other valuables and escaped.

Police have registered a case.

SHOT DEAD: A woman was shot dead allegedly by her husband over a domestic issue in Sabzi Mandi area on Saturday.

Asif opended fire on his wife after a quarrel over domestic expenditures. The woman died on the spot.

The police have registered a case against the absconding accused.

ACCIDENT: Two cousins were hit and killed by a trailer near Lohianwala Bypass Intersection on Saturday.

Nasir and Ahsan, of Sultanpura locality, were going on a motorcycle when a trailer hit them near Kotli Peer Ahmad locality. The two cousins died on the spot.

The police have registered a case against the absconding trailer driver and handed over the bodies to their heirs after completing legal formalities.

STRIKE: District bar associations of Wazirabad and Gujranwala observed a complete strike on Saturday to protest the murder of former law officer Shahzad Ahmad Cheema in Ghakkhar Town.

The lawyers demanded early arrest of the the accused.

The judges adjourned the cases till the next hearing due to lawyers’ strike.
