ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf will announce the roadmap for the next general elections on August 14, 2012, sources said on Sunday.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) held a meeting today to discuss the upcoming general elections.

The sources said that the general elections are expected in the first week of November, however, the prime minister will formally announce the road-map on August 14.

Seven-member team of the PML-N, which included Chaudhry Nisar, Raja Zafar-ul-Haq, Khawaja Asif, Ishaq Dar and Pervez Rasheed, and five-member team of the PPP, which included Khursheed Shah, Aitzaz Ahsan, Raza Rabbani, Farhatullah Babar and Jehangir Badar attended the meeting, the sources said.

It was agreed in the meeting that the prime minister, chief ministers, and other federal and state ministers in the care-taker set-up will be residents of Pakistan. The care-taker prime minister will neither be from the PPP or the PML-N, nor one who has been a member or leader of any other political party, the sources added.

Both the PML-N and the PPP, in consultation with other political parties, will also formulate code of conduct for the general election.

The meeting also decided that NAB references will not be filed against any political leader till the next elections.

The sources also said that the negotiations between the PML-N and the PPP on the care-taker setup were supported by few of the ally countries who wanted politics of reconciliation in the country.

Some media outlets reported that the names of two candidates are being discussed for the post of caretaker prime minister: Abdullah Hussain Haroon, currently Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Nations and Asma Jahangir, the former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and former chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).

Kudos for the government and opposition for having to resolve the contentious issue of holding the general elections little before scheduled time. Of late, both the camps have shown great deal of maturity in amicable resolution of , potentially complex issues, which will auger well for the democracy in the country. I believe the evolution of democratic process continue unhindered.

how can elections be in november?? didnt this same raja rental state a few weeks ago that elections would be in march 2013? how will the government get ready for elections in 5 months? electoral rolls, the massive logistical arrangements, i find it hard to believe..

Caretaker PM should be 100% neutral person with excellent track record so that the outcome of the election is accepted by all without any reservations, which has remained the hall mark of the losing parties in the past. Couple with recently appointed neutral CEC, this would play an extremely important role to show to the world that Pakistan still has the strength and resolve to face the issues.

It seems our main political parties, PPP and PML-N, seem to have indeed learnt their lesson, namely that it is in everyone's interest to have free and fair elections. After 60 years of being derailed by egotistical military and civilian rulers, perhaps democracy is finally being put back on track. If so, all those who play their part in ensuring free and fair elections in November and in events leading to this day will go down in history as the real "founding fathers" of Pakistan. And this includes first and foremost the Chief Justice who stood firm in face of a dictator who was bent on becoming the "Hosni Mubarak" of Pakistan through misuse of his authority)

As a person and lawyer Asma Jehangir is a well spoken person.. But for a Prime Minister a Business Magnate of repute would be ideal for he would understand the Economic , Political and current situation of Pakistan. Not Asma Jehangir.

As for PTI they have already won that is why the two heads badly shaken wants to throw their yard stick and sat down. What a shame.
