Girl commits suicide

ISLAMABAD, July 15: A girl committed suicide in her house at Shahzad Town on Sunday.

Police said the 17-year-old Husna, daughter of a daily-wage worker and a resident of Pindorian village, was found hanging with her dupata from the ceiling fan when her mother and sister-in-law opened the door of her room.

Police said there was no major cause behind the incident but the girl’s mother revealed that she had exchanged some harsh words with her sister-in-law over washing of clothes in the morning. The mother first thought that her daughter was sleeping in the room but when she knocked the door, there was no response. As a result, the two women broke the door open and found the girl hanging, the police said. —Staff Reporter

Cops held

TAXILA, July 15: The Sub Divisional Police Officer Taxila circle Raja Taifoor Akhter, booked and sent three cops behind the bars on Saturday.

Police sources said the three cops, Sub-inspector (SI) Mohammad Azam along with constables Nazeer Ahmed and Mohammad Amin, allegedly tampered with an FIR of a murder case in order to benefit the accused party. — Correspondent

Kidnapped lawyer recovered

MURREE, July 15: Murree police succeeded in recovering Advocate Gul Aftab Abbasi who was kidnapped five days ago by some unidentified persons.

Talking to Dawn Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Murree Abbas Majeed Khan Marwat said that after abduction of the lawyer, police had been making all out efforts to recover him and finally, on the information of some sources, they reached Mianwali and recovered him from a house, unharmed.

Lawyers of Murree, Murree Bar Association and Gull’s relatives appreciated the performance of police and thanked the ASP for his personal efforts to recover the victim. — Correspondent

Ramazan bazaars

TAXILA, July 15: Arrangements are being finalised to set up Ramazan bazaars in Taxila to provide relief to consumers during the upcoming holy month of Ramazan.

Tehsil Municipal Officer Khalid Khan reported on Saturday that the town administration is finalising all arrangements to establish ‘Sasta Bazaars’ which will provide quality food items on subsidised rates.

Khan said that efforts in accordance with the special directives of the Punjab chief minister would be made to provide relief to the citizens.

He added that citizens would be able to purchase all sorts of cooking ingredients, including flour, sugar, pulses, meat, onion, potatoes, cooking oil and other kitchen products at subsidised rates. Fresh vegetables, fruits and dates would also be available in these bazaars.

Khan also said that special price control magistrates would be appointed in each bazaar to keep a check on the prices and quality of the items. — Correspondent

Mango festival held

ISLAMABAD, July 15: Varieties of mangoes grown in Punjab were showcased at the ‘Punjab Mango Festival’ here on Sunday.

The festival, organised jointly by Punjab Agricultural Department and Punjab Board of Investment and Trade (PBIT), offered a perfect networking opportunity for producers, exporters and international buyers for enhancing its export to high end international markets and attracted members of the diplomatic community, civil society and a lot of mango lovers.

Punjab Chief Minister Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif was scheduled to open the festival, however, it was announced that due to inclement weather conditions, his helicopter could not take-off from Murree. Representing the CM, former finance minister Ishaq Dar performed the inauguration. — Our Reporter

‘Drug smugglers’ arrested

TAXILA, July 15: Wah Saddar police arrested two alleged smugglers and claimed to confiscate drugs from them here on Sunday.

Police sources said that during a security check on G.T. Road, 1.5 kg charas each was recovered from T.K and B.A. in separate incidents when they were traveling in passenger buses heading for Rawalpindi from Peshawar. Separate cases were registered against the accused. — Correspondent

Woman foils ‘assault’

TAXILA, July 15: A woman prevented an alleged sexual assault by three men in Lala Rukh locality of Wah Cantonment police station on Sunday.

Police quoted the victim’s husband who complained that his wife was alone at home when S.A. and two of his friends came there and tried to sexually assault her but fled when she started making hue and cry.

Wah Cantonment police registered a case and initiated further investigation. — Correspondent
