ISLAMABAD, July 18: Two rather rowdy lawyers associated with Rawalpindi bar abused and threatened a DawnNews team and broke their camera in the premises of city’s lower courts here on Wednesday, police said.
Over the incident, the Margalla police registered a case against the lawyers on charges of PPCs 506 and 427.
The three-member team including Reporter Shakil Karar and Cameraman Maqsood Ahmed came over to the district and sessions court in Sector F-8 to make a report.
Shortly after, two lawyers approached them and started abusing them. In response, the news channel team inquired the reason behind the treatment meted out to them but all of sudden one of the lawyers snatched the camera and broke it.
Later, the matter was brought to the notice of Islamabad bar association which called the lawyers and inquired about the matter. In response, they clarified that they treated the DawnNews team in the manner as they mistook them for the team of another TV channel, who had earlier tried to make a video of some accused, which annoyed them.
But they were short of words when the bar representatives asked the offending lawyers whether, before attacking the team, they had asked for identification or bothered to see their official cards.
Editor DawnNews Mubashir Zaidi over the incident said that it was totally an unprovoked incident. The team went there for a story but it was attacked without any reason.
President PFUJ Pervez Shaukat also condemned the incident and asked president Rawalpindi bar to take action against the lawyers besides paying compensation to the channel.
Pioneer President Islamabad High Court Bar Association Chaudhry Mohammad Ashraf Gujar also condemned the incident and recommended the bar should take stern disciplinary action against the lawyers.
