ISLAMABAD, July 18: An man allegedly involved in human trafficking attempted self-immolation in the custody of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), police said on Wednesday.

The accused was arrested by FIA’s Passport Cell in connection with human trafficking as he played a role of agent between people and a travel agent to arrange visas for them.

The accused along with the agent was detained at the FIA office in Iqbal Town on physical remand. According to police, he was depressed as the agent was yet to confess having taken money from him.

Due to the stress, he set himself on fire in the lock-up using the match box that he had borrowed from an FIA official on pretext of lighting a cigarette.

On seeing the flames engulfing him, other inmates of the lock-up rushed to rescue him and extinguished fire.

Later, the FIA officials were informed who took him to hospital for medical assistance. The incident was also brought to the notice of Shahzad Town police who took him in their custody and registered a case against him on charge of attempting suicide.
