ISLAMABAD: The Smart National Identity Card (NIC) has 36 security features and technologically is the most advanced card in the world today, National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) Chairman said.
Briefing the Cabinet about the features of the Smart NIC prior to its formal launch in the country, the Chairman said the Smart NIC Card would help the holders of the card access the entitled cash disbursement programmes, financial transactions, branchless banking, health insurance, life insurance and electronic voting.
He said that the card would help the government achieve the objectives of welfare state.
The Chairman also told the prime minister that 96 percent of the adult population of the country had been registered with Nadra and about 92.6 million identity cards had been issued to eligible voters.
The prime minister said it will be a great source of convenience to the people as they need not go to banks to avail financial facilities.
Isn't the intrusion to somone's privacy? They will know everything I do with just a card?
This is too much infringement on privacy of the individual. Nadra should not poke into personal business transactions or health records. DO they have enough security features in place to protect privacy to the fullest ?

ECP and Nadra should work together to check and ensure unbiased fair elections
yes , people can vote electronically, i smell a rat. a person being provided with an advanced ID card and he/she is a fake, then, he does not need to come to the polling booth. NO. if such thing has to be done , then government involvement in it needs to be minimal, and , measures should be adopted to scrutinize voters lists by a commission before and after the coming elections
DO we really need such 'smart' systems ? Are such systems trying to overcome the corrupt people working at the grass root/ground level ?
Has anyone thought about privacy ?? I for one do not want my health insurance records OR more importantly financial records available to every common clerk who might have the means to access them from his computer by just using my NIC number..This seems like a new age electronic servitude where the common citizen is given a lesser right to privacy.
Controlling and getting rid of corruption is key to prospering.
Please also add information like , Driver's license , Arms license , Blood group , Land and property data on the new NIC. It would truly be revolutionary.

Good Job Nadra, database is so very important, if leveraged law enforcer can reduce crimes through linking the license plates, facial recognition, tracking the location with RFID.
I am a bit skeptical that NADRA may infringe on the Civil Liberties as they have learned a lot of tricks from the Western Countries.

That shows Pakistan can build good institutions, if there is political will.
Yet another scam to milk money from the people and fill somebody's pockets.
Please dont make empty statements, you should really look at NADRA's performance and financial figures before you assume its a scam. I can understand its hard to beleive that a Pakistani public sector (partial public sector) is performing well, but its a fact and for once we should encourage good practices and strive to make it even better with positive feedback.

NADRA has emerged as a very strong, useful and credible institution in the recent years. They seem like going in the right direction. Keep it up!
96% have ID cards. First make it 100% then start other services.
