Policeman shot dead

MARDAN, July 19: A police constable was killed in an exchange of fire with a proclaimed offender in Pandhere area here on Thursday.

The officials of Chora police station led by SHO Shafiur Rehman raided a house after a tip-off that a proclaimed offender identified as Wahid Ali Khan was staying there.

On seeing the police team, the accused opened fire which led to an exchange of fire. As a result, Noorul Aslam, a constable of elite force, was killed on the spot. The accused, however, managed to escape.The Chora police have registered a case and started search for the accused.

Later, the constable was laid to rest with full honours in his ancestral graveyard located in Fazalabad Takar area. —Correspondent

Three killed in Charsadda

CHARSADDA, July 19: Three people were killed in separate incidents in different areas of Charsadda here on Thursday.

According to reports, body of an unknown youth was recovered from the bank of Lower Swat canal near Abazai, Tangi, while another body of an unidentified young lady was found near Jendi river Pul. Both the bodies are yet to be identified. Tangi police have registered cases and started investigation.

In another incident, Tahir Shah opened fire on his wife over some family dispute. She later succumbed to her wounds. Bismillah, son of the deceased women, lodged an FIR with Omarzai police against his father. —Correspondent

Freezing of properties

PESHAWAR, July 19: An accountability court here on Thursday confirmed the freezing of some immovable properties of a police officer, Rajab Ali, by the National Accountability Bureau (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa).

The court presided over by Syed Mussadiq Hussain Gillani issued the order regarding four pieces of land allegedly possessed by Rajab Ali. The confirmation order was issued under section 12 of the Accountability Bureau Ordinance, 1999.

The NAB (KP) had referred the order to the accountability court requesting for its confirmation.

The initial order regarding the freezing of the properties was issued by the director general of NAB(KP) on July 10. Under section 12 of the NAB ordinance such order could be issued for a period of 15 days and it has to be sent to the accountability court for confirmation. —Bureau Report

Couple killed in Chitral

CHITRAL, July 19: A couple was murdered in Drosh Town here on Thursday afternoon for allegedly having illicit relations.

Local police told Dawn that Mohammad Ismail with the help of his alleged accomplices Mohammad Din and Janan Khan stabbed to death Habibur Rahman of Dam Gol village of Drosh in his house.

They later on shot dead Taj Mina Bibi of the same village. The assailants were later arrested by the police and booked under the sections 302, 324 and 334 of PPC. The accused would be produced before the area court on Friday for remand, a police official said. —Correspondent

Surprise inspection

LAKKI MARWAT, July 19: DPO Umar Riaz and ACO Liaqat Ali Bhatti along with a police contingent paid surprise inspection visits to several bazaars and markets in Lakki city on Thursday to check prices of daily use items ahead of Ramazan.

They went to bazaars in Minakhel, Michenkhel, Saeedkhel, Mela Mandi and other urban localities and checked official pricelists displayed outside the shops and business outlets. The officials also checked the quality of food items and hygiene conditions in and around the business centres.

The officials also visited soft drink factories where they expressed their dismay over the poor state of cleanliness and directed relevant authorities to collect samples and dispatch them to the laboratory for chemical examination. —Correspondent

Grant for education centre

PESHAWAR, July 19: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti has approved Rs10 million as one-time grant-in-aid for endowment fund for Mohammad Azam Khan Special Education Centre Charsadda during financial year 2012-13.

The said centre for deaf and dumb children was established in 1999 by Anjuman Naujawanan Charsadda. Currently 78 students are enrolled at the centre and it was first such institute in the area.

According to a survey carried out earlier to establishment of this institute, a total of 4,500 children were deaf and dumb out of which 2,000 are below the age of 12. A total of 754 students have so far benefited from the institute. —Bureau Report
