TAXILA, July 20: Angry employees sacked from a local defence industry took to the streets with their family on Friday, to stage a sit in at Taxila chowk.

The charged employees, including female workers, carried placards inscribed with their demands — mainly demanding their restoration — chanting slogans. Taxila chowk was the point where protesters conglomerated around 3pm.

Eight hundred is the total count of employees sacked, which includes female workers.

Talking to journalists, the protesting workers said they rendered over five to 15 years of service and now instead of regularisation their contract of service had been terminated.

They termed the termination letter ‘a Ramazan gift’ to them and their family members by the democratic government, which always claims to be worker-friendly.

The protesters called upon the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and President Asif Ali Zardari to take stock of their plight. On getting information, a police contingent rushed to the spot and restored traffic after successful negotiation with protesters. — Correspondent
