Brawl claims three lives

KOHAT, July 21: A man committed suicide after shooting to death his stepmother and wife in Zara Mela area here on Saturday.

The police said Noor Badshah was very disturbed due to daily brawls between his wife and stepmother. He was recently married to an 18 years old girl. On Saturday, he exchanged hot words with them and then killed his mother, Gulshah Jan, and wife, Rasheeda. Later, he shot and injured himself. He succumbed to injuries on way to hospital.

The Jarma police handed over the bodies to relatives after post-mortem.

The police were interrogating the members of the family to confirm whether it was a suicide case or somebody else had killed them.—Correspondent

Two shot dead

CHARSADDA, July 21: Two persons were shot dead by unknown assailants in Wardaga area of Sra Dheri on Saturday.

Jehangir of Angar Kali Rajar reported to Sardheri police that he along with his brother Jehan Zeb and an associate Naeem were going in their car that armed men opened indiscriminate fire on them when they reached Matto village. As a result his brother Jehan Zeb and friend Naeem were killed on the spot. The attackers managed to escape after the incident.

Meanwhile, ACO Charsadda Naeem Khan and NGO Sabawon project manger Azmat Khan Marwat have called for mutual interaction between public and private institutions and community members to deal with floods and other natural calamities in future.

They were addressing an advocacy seminar titled “Community Best Disaster Management”.—Correspondent

Smeda distributes cheques

PESHAWAR, July 21: The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) has distributed Rs2.6 million cheques among flood affected small enterprises of Garah Balouch union council of Tank district.

As implementing partner of UNDP-funded “Early Flood Recovery Communities” programme, Smeda extended Rs30,000 each among more than 89 small enterprises.

The programme’s provincial coordinator Ms Noor Zeba distributed the cheques at a ceremony, according to a press release issued here on Saturday.

Ms Noor Zeba said the Smeda with financial support of UNDP had extended grant to recover the flood-affected small businesses in the region, adding efforts were being made to work on other relevant sectors as well.

She expressed the hope that the UNDP-funded project would help to revive the flood-hit small businesses in the area, saying Smeda was playing pivotal role in facilitating the affected people.—Bureau Report

Arrest of girl’s killers sought

PESHAWAR, July 21: Munawar Khan of Gara Tajik village has appealed to the PHC chief justice, chief minister and PPO to order arrest of a three member gang involved in the killing of his 12-year-old daughter on April 19, 2012.

Talking to media persons at Peshawar Press Club on Saturday the complainant said one Shoaib of the same village and his relative took his (Munawar’s) daughter with him to the BISP office as he had earlier promised to get them registered with the programme. But, Mr Munawar said her body was recovered from Budhni water canal on April 28.

Mr Munawar said Shoaib had kidnapped his daughter as he had demanded Rs100,000 as ransom for her release but he was very poor to pay the ransom.

The medico-legal report, he said stated the girl had been sexually abused and later shot dead.—Bureau Report

Minor dies in roof collapse

PESHAWAR, July 21: A six-year-old boy was killed and his mother seriously injured when roof of a room caved in at Afghan Colony here on Saturday.

An official of the Faqirabad police station said the deceased boy was identified as Murtaza and his mother Khapairai was seriously wounded.

Hakeem, son of Abdul Aziz, in his report to the local police said the roof had caved in due to break up of the beam on Saturday morning. The woman, he said had been shifted to Lady Reading Hospital, where her condition was out of danger.—Bureau Report

Police highhandedness

PESHAWAR, July 21: Leader of a civil society organisation has accused the Peshtakhara police of illegally arresting his brother and forcing him to pay ransom for his release.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Saturday, Sheher Yar Khalil, chief executive of Inqilab Welfare Organisation, Peshawar, said some weeks ago police had arrested his brother Bakht Baidar, nephew Ahmed Yar and a taxi driver in Saddar bazaar and kept them imprisoned for 27 days.

He said the police released rest of people, but kept his brother behind bars demanding Rs5 million for his release. “As we refused to pay such a huge amount without any reason the sum was reduced to Rs1.3 million,” he said, adding his brother was released on payment of Rs0.3 million.

He said police again raided his residence and took away valuables for the simple reason that I could not pay the remaining amount on time.—Bureau Report

Utility store opened

KOHAT, July 21: The district and sessions judge on Saturday inaugurated a utility store inside the courts premises.

The judge Inamullah Khan had asked the administration for opening a separate utility store for judges, lawyers and lower staff so that they could benefit from Ramazan package.
The district and sessions judge directed the staff of the utility store to implement the Ramazan package so that people could get edibles at low rates.

Meanwhile, the police arrested 23 outlaws, including two proclaimed offenders, during a search operation on Saturday.

The operation was conducted by the cantonment, Jungle Khel, Gumbat, Bilitang, Jarma, Saddar and city police. The proclaimed offenders were identified as Nadeem and Yasin, residents of Merozai. The police seized two Kalashnikovs, one repeater, four rifles and half kilogram of hashish from the accused.—Correspondent

Football tournament

CHARSADDA, July 21: The final match of the All Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Khan Raziq Memorial Football tournament was won by Charsadda club, beating Mardan club on penalties.

Provincial Law Minister Barrister Arshad Abdullah was chief guest who distributed trophies, certificates and cash prices among the winners.

A large number of locals enjoyed the final match. Both the teams showed sportsman spirit and got applause from the audience. The match remained tied in the appropriate time and was decided on penalty kicks. Chrasadda club scored all the five penalties while Mardan scored only three goals.—Correspondent
