ISLAMABAD: Export of non-textile products posted a paltry growth of 2.386 per cent in the outgoing fiscal year from a year ago, mainly driven by increase in export of sports goods, surgical instruments, engineering goods and cement.
However, export of rice, footwear, leather goods, and carpets witnessed a substantial decline during the year under review over last year, suggested data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on Monday.
The share of non-textile products in the country’s total exports rose to 47.7 per cent in 2011-12 from 44 per cent in the previous years.
In absolute terms, total volume of non-textile products reached $11.285 billion in 2011-12 as against $11.022 billion over the same period last year, showing an increase of 2.386 per cent.
Export of textile products witnessed a negative growth of 10.38 per cent in 2011-12 over the previous year.
A decline of 8.80 per cent was witnessed in export of carpets in 2011-12 over the previous year. Export of sports goods was up by 0.47 per cent in July-June 2011-12 this year over last year.
Export of footballs recorded an increase of 8.13 per cent. However, export of gloves declined by 9.25pc.
Pakistan’s export of surgical goods and medical instruments increased by 14.10 per cent, engineering goods was up 10.78 per cent, jewellery 128.77 per cent and cement 9.06 per cent during the period under review over the previous year.
However, export of leather goods declined by 4.18 per cent in 2011-12 this year over previous year. Leather gloves recorded a growth of 33 per cent during the period under review. Footwear exports posted a negative growth of 9.57 per cent in 2011-12 over the previous year.
Overall export of food group reached $4.237 billion in 2011-12 as against $4.509 billion over the same period in the previous year, showing a decline of 6.03 per cent.
Fall in export of food group was mainly driven by decline in export of rice of all varieties. Export of basmati rice declined by 14.87 per cent during the period under review from a year ago.
Non-basmati rice recorded a growth of 3.70 per cent during the period under review.
Export of meat recorded a growth of 14.28 per cent in 2011-12 over last year.
Export of fish products increased by 6.53 per cent, fruits 22.49 per cent, sugar 100 per cent, tobacco 8.68 per cent, in 2011-12 over the previous year.
