KARACHI, July 23: Five persons, including a police inspector and a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, were shot dead in the city on Monday, police said.

They said that on Monday night armed men riding a motorcycle intercepted Abdul Moid, who was also on a motorbike, near Doli Khata, Lighthouse, fired at him and fled.

The victim was rushed to the nearby Civil Hospital Karachi, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police said that he was an activist of the MQM and a member of the PIB Colony sector of the MQM’s organisational structure.

Tension gripped the locality and surrounding areas following the news of his killing.

Police inspector

A police inspector was shot dead in an Orangi Town locality on Monday evening, police said.

They said that Inspector Fazal Mehmood was a resident of the Police Quarters located behind the Orangi Town police station.

SSP-West Amir Farooqui said that the victim was on his way to a nearby mosque to offer Maghrib prayers when he was targeted.

As he was crossing the main road, the SSP said, two men on a motorcycle emerged there, fired shots at him and rode away.

He was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, but he died on way to the hospital, the police said.

The victim was currently posted in the Police Headquarters, Garden.

Man gunned down in Lyari A man was shot dead in a Lyari area on Monday, police said. They said that the incident took place near Juman Shah Plot within the remit of the Kalakot police station. They said Qasim Shah Baloch, 42, was sitting outside his home when two men on a motorcycle emerged there, one of them fired shots at the victim and they rode away. The victim died before he could be taken to hospital, the police said, adding that he had a business in Jodia Bazaar and also had some business in Balochistan. The police claimed that the victim was also related to the assassinated ‘Lyari gangster Rehman Dakait’. The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for legal formalities.

Bullet-riddled body The body of an unidentified man was found on Mirza Adam Khan Road within the remit of the Garden police station on Monday morning. Police said the victim, aged between 22 and 23 years, had been shot to the head. It appeared that he was killed after being kidnapped, they added. The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Later, the body was taken to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

Woman killed A woman was shot dead in Baldia Town on Monday evening. Police said the murder took place within the remit of the Mawach Goth police station, where Zulekha, 32, wife of Qudratullah, had come to her mother’s home to see her family. As she was standing with her mother outside the house, two men on a motorcycle arrived there, fired at her and fled. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The police said she was a resident of Bhitaibad in the Sachal area and occasionally visited her mother’s home.
