KARACHI, July 24: The Disease Early Warning System (Dews) of the World Health Organisation working in coordination with the provincial health department has detected yet another case of Naegleria Meningitis admitted to a private hospital in the Bahadurabad area recently, said a source in the health department on Tuesday.

According to Dews, a 27-year-old man living in Ittehad Town, Baldia, was admitted to a private hospital on July 11 with the history of high-grade fever, headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, altered consciousness and bleeding from the nose. His cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample tested positive for Naegleria Fowleri on July 12 and due treatment started the same day, but patient died on July 13.

The death brought the tally of naegleria meningitis (or primary amoebic meningoencephalitis) deaths, as confirmed by Dews, to five this year in the city. The deceased, too, had no history of swimming, said the source.
